Anyone try one of these garage air line kits?

I thought we had a thread about this already but I can't find it. I priced out doing this in copper with brass ball valves and fittings it's around $400. Or I can get the poly kit for half the price.

Anyone tried this?

Subscribed. I've always wondered why people don't use actual airhose as the air-line. I need a bike air supply in my backyard. I want one of those presta inflator guns. Pumping gets old.

Because the air hose itself lacks sufficient volume to really carry much air for long distances. With 100 feet of hose you might have 100 psi at the compressor and only have 60 psi at the end of the air hose. Ok for inflating a bike tire, but would suck for using any air tools.

Well this is 3/4" and is rigid vs. a flex air hose. It has great reviews, and the price is $199 on amazon. I might just grab it since it's so cheap.

I installed something very similar in a mid sized body shop with great results. Can get expensive but very nice to work with. Rubber airhose will deteriorate over time.

A lot of people use PVC pipe. Run 1" for the first 20ft then 3/4" the rest of the way.

I understand that there is an explosion/failure danger with PVC pipe.

Oxygen barrier pex tubing and sharkbite connectors. You can get everything at Lowe's or Home Depot.

You can use the crimp tool on them also.

There is SIGNIFICANT failure danger with PVC pipe. Don't do it. ASME and OSHA have specific mandates against this for a reason.

You can use thick-walled HDPE tubing (3/4" OD tubing runs ~$0.45/ft) and push-connect or compression fittings to do this safely.

The only PEX-like product I'm aware of for compressed air is Duratec by IPEX. Asahi markets a fused HDPE air line (called Airpro).

I've been witness first hand to shattered pvc air lines. It gets damn cold here in the rockies the slightest little bump with a tool can shatter the stuff.

Most white PVC is scheduale 40 or sked 40, the gray sked 80 is the pipe to use if your going the PVC route, its expensive but won't break.

Well it's $139 for the kit I need with the appropriate compressor manifold. Then I need to add a "T" and another outlet for a hanging hose reel I have. So I guess I'm going to do it. Should be enough hose in the kit according to my tape measure.

Regardless of wall thickness, please don't use materials with brittle-fracture characteristics (PVC, polypropylene, etc) for compressed gas service. They do fail, they fail explosively, and people get hurt.

Polyethylenes, ABS, steel, rubber hose - all make better air line.

We used PVC piping around the garage and its worked for almost 10 years now. First off it rarely gets below 50 here and no matter what its always left unpressurized and when turned on, its done slowly.

must be a northern thing.. Most shops down here in Florida that I have been in use PVC. But I can see the cold-brittle issue

PVC will also become brittle in sunlight. So the amount of exposure that it gets in your garage could also become a factor.

Harbor Freight has a large variety of lines, ball valves, couplers for a fraction of the cost posted above. I agree going with the large i.d. for volume, especially for air tools and HVLP spray guns.
