Wow, some serious tips here ... when we did this a couple of years ago I went old school and kept it simple. No podiums but the kids had fun with it.

Make sure you keep adding removeable weight until the digital scale changes to the next ounce at home, and then back off a shade. At the races, you can always remove a small bit of weight, but can not add weight, so go heavy.

Those are some sweet cars...

Going heavy is good advice but I've seen plenty of cars that were not pushed to the max weight go blindingly fast.

Polishing the axles is critical - instead of using a standard drill though I suggest a high speed dremel to chuck them in. You'll get a smoother axle - we lost to one like this this year and as the Dad and I were talking that was the only thing we could think of he really did differently. Otherwise we had pretty much worked on our cars together with our sons and did almost everything the same. We were all pleased with the end result. It's nice to be in a group that gets along so well too that we can talk about things like this openly.
