One very lucky man in Corvette vs truck crash

Hard to believe he lived through this even though he had the presence of mind to duck at the last second.

If I had been stuck in that car until someone came to get me out I would have died of claustrophobia. It's one of my worse nightmares.

Good reason not to tailgate a semi! or text for that matter.

Pretty sad when an 18 wheeler can out brake a corvette.

Yep, just inattentive driving.

True, but I think those bumpers on the trailers need to be looked at. They seem way dangerous.

That crash test footage within the article is amazing. I never realized how wimpy those guards are on the trailers.

The last line of the report:

best to avoid tailgating, and hope if you too have an accident, there's time to duck.

I saw this the other day on another site. " Wimpy" as you might think the guard/bumper on that trailer was, when they jacked up the trailer and winched the remains of the Vette out from under, the trailer bumper was intact. The Vette had enough velocity at impact to wedge itself about 5 feet under the rear of the trailer. Without that "wimpy" bumper the Vette driver would be looking for his head.

I was taught in Drivers' Ed. over four decades ago, if you hit another vehicle in the rear, you screwed up somehow.

It only takes a second's inattention.
Stay safe out there

It is interesting that we immediately look to the tractor/trailer unit as a contributor to the potential seriousness of the accident...

I hate to sound like a hardass, but the Corvette driver failed to notice an object directly in his path that was 70 feet long, 14 feet high, and 8.5 feet wide...

He would have simply driven THROUGH my 911.

Couldn't agree more. A corvette can brake in 1/2 to 1/3 the distance of a semi, I would assume. Driver inattentiveness. I saw another post of this yesterday and the discussion was that more legislation was needed to make sure trucks had strong enough crash bars to prevent this travesty. How about we just thin the gene pool.

Yes, we need more laws and regulation to protect us from ourselves.

And if the trailer had a tailight out the Vette driver will be suing the trucking company.

I wonder what the outcome would have been if he ran into the back of mine.
I think he'd fare better with one that gives as opposed to one that doesn't.
I realize that mine is a lot lower then the one he hit but, it would take a lot to bend mine.

I am just gald he hit a truck, and not some car full of people. He did not hurt that truck much. I am sure the truck driver was not hurt.
