What do you get out of OFF TOPICS...

forum? This is a very open question. On the negative side my wife gives me a hard time about being on the computer so much.On the positive side I enjoy all the good info you hand out. Also the warm fuzzy feeling I get for example from FASTFREDRACING's thread of unconditional generous responses to helping his partner out. I certainly learned from that.:):)

GH85Carrera 01-25-2013 04:54 AM

I get the occasional laugh. I have learned a lot. Like the Gary Busy thread, I know about inner-tubes now.

The brain trust is amazing. I have asked some obscure questions and found a real answer in short order. That is better than Google.

I learned that if I take a picture of my roofing girl I should get a model release. I know not to trim my sack with scissors, and a well set up 944 is really fast.

This had me busting up laughing...that's perfect!! Especially, the sack and scissors part... OMG!!!! haha

I've learned PPOT makes my a$$ look fat...contrary to that "broad thin" look I'm trying to regain...so then I just go away for a while :)

Tervuren 01-25-2013 05:01 AM

The short answer.

I don't watch news, news produces a lot of bad side affects, bad reporting, and agendas.

If its important enough it gets posted here, then its newsworthy. That includes the mundane things of life that get posted here to. SmileWavy

Jferr006 01-25-2013 05:05 AM

Time kill at work and a headache.

A safe place to get away from the wife without getting into trouble. Unfortunately, the scotch and cigars are not as good online.

True, I quit watching the news last year so i only see it if it makes it to a forum or incessently on FB.

I love the fact that Porsche ownership cuts across so many people with such different views and experiences. I also love the fact that we are all on the same level here, no matter what our financial means or social status.

I have learnt a lot, I laugh a lot, and I forward a heck of a lot of threads to non-Pelicanites too!

A chance to refine one's points of view by holding them up to public criticism and scrutiny. A chance to see what others think and how they deal with situations, right or wrong. A virtual agora of sorts.

I do!.. Fb people are more real since I actually know/hang out with them. Unfortunately 2/3's of them are girls and could give **** about my car projects and the 1/3 that might be car guys don't give a **** about my 944 because it is the red-headed, bastard step child.

Drdogface 01-25-2013 06:23 AM

T&A, not on my list :)

onewhippedpuppy 01-25-2013 07:13 AM

This is my focus group. There's not a question, no matter how random, that someone(s) on PPOT does not know something about. Plus I can always find people to drink beer with when I travel.:)

Eric 951 01-25-2013 07:32 AM

Great advice on a wide range of topics.

Lubemaster hooked me up with a (free!) jug of fork oil for my old Moto Morini after I posted here asking for advice in trying to source the required spec oil indicated in the manual.

I learned that David is a helluva talented gunsmith (and somewhat local) so I now know where I am taking my SKB to get it repaired (as soon as I have the time).

Onewhippedpuppy (and others) educated me on Land Cruisers and helped influence my decision to purchase a 250K mile FJ62

Plus many others I have forgotten.

(and the occasional laugh as well).

This. And when to cover up my hootus.

Medical, real estate, law, wife, vacation spots, how much people hate CA and yet they are still coming and crowding up our freeways, and everything else in between. This place is just a little better then reading my old encyclopedia that I never had. it doesn't get better then that.

speeder 01-25-2013 08:49 AM

It's a strange addiction, but very real. Thanks to me, there is a whole group of people in Los Angeles that know all about Pelican forums even though they've never been on them. You basically cannot be a close friend of mine without knowing that this place is a part of my life. :)

speeder 01-25-2013 08:53 AM

There is an amazing wealth of knowledge here. Deeper than you could ever know, because in addition to the known posters, (who cover a pretty wide spectrum of experience and expertise), there are countless lurkers who will sometimes chime in when a subject they are familiar with comes up.

It amazes me. It also amazes my friends, who cannot believe the asset I have here.

Like I've said before....If you ask a question here about a widget, you not only find other widget owners, but widget designers, widget producers and the name of a better widget then your asking about in the first place.

And I'll post a few pictures of widgets. ;)

This. Spend more time on here then all the other forums I belong to, combined. Have met some great people on here. online and in person.

and when my cable is out, and I miss my fix of Honey boo boo, American Chopper, and Jersey Shore, and other reality TV, I head over to PARF...:p

edgemar 01-25-2013 09:09 AM

Great advice on random stuff. Also a good laugh every once in a while.

Power Generation, Solar, How to do flooring in your house. Air Conditioning. And let us not forget the constant discussion of spoons.

scottmandue 01-25-2013 09:26 AM

I come here to search for the ultimate, cheap, reliable, car... :p

72doug2,2S 01-25-2013 10:25 AM

The 550 is The Little Bastard, the 924 is the stepchild, the 928 is the voodoo child.

I like red heads, which one is that?

I am in awe of the talent displayed here.
I have seen amazing projects, (gunsmithing, guitar construction, automobile restoration, motorcycle modification and electronic rebuilding.)
I have seen people inquire about everything from the mundane to the life threatening (and get help which may have saved their life).
I have managed to connect my son with a couple of Pelicans who needed IT work and (I think) it worked out well for both parties.
Then there are amazing links to images and a good laugh now and again.

I don't post as much as several others, but I spend a bit of time here every week.
This is, in a way a community of which I feel I am a part.

Glad to "know" many of you here.
Les

PPOT is my favorite for many reasons. Ask a question, it gets answered. You need a little help with something, you get help. Need a laugh, done. Need to vent about something, rant away. :D Lost your best friend, you have more here. I have met a few of you and its always been a pleasure.
