i need a suggestion of for a trout rod.

all my gear is bass fishing stuff.

i need a trout rod. prefer something two piece.about 6 feet. i am hiking into the sierras for trout this late spring. long brutal hike, but that means we get the lakes to ourselves. this rod will get strapped to the outside of the pack. Aigel...you are invited!!

any suggestions? i dont want to break the bank..as i still need to buy a good sleeping pad. have you seen the sleeping pad technology? amazing. i have an unopened NEOair that was the best..i am gonna return it to REI..if they take it and get a better one.

That looks a lot like my old 1960's eagle claw back packing rod...only it was fiberglass, and the tube case was aluminum. I had an envelope sewn from old toweling with a long pocket for each rod piece. Kept them from rattling together.

If you come across a high lake with brook trout, try a panther martin spinner...that is unless fish tastes have changed over the years.

The little gold Kastmasters are great too.

If you're watching your pennies, Sage and Winston will kill you (great rods though). On a budget you can't go wrong with Cabelas. If you haven't tried it, fly is the way to go. I mean, hell, you already hunt with a bow. Might as well take it "stealth" all the way.

Great - I am in!

Any decent two piece light rod will be good. I'd go with a 6.5 or even 7 foot. You will want to be able to cast far into the lake - 30 yards +. I use the same rod and reel for Southern saltwater (Speckled Trout / Redfish) with a small penn saltwater reel. Also keep the far casts in mind when you buy lures. For artificial lures to get into the center and the bottom of the lake, you can't beat the Kastmasters - 1/4 ounce IMHO.

Trout fishing? Gotta fly fish for them. Do your self favor, go to BassPro or Cabala's and take a fly fishing class. Practice your casts - its easy when you learn a few basics and practice. If you think you will just go out and fly fish then you will have a boring time and prolly rat nest your reel.

According to my son, once you learn to fly fish and catch your first one fishing that way your won't want to fish any other way. Its a totally different way than what your used too. It requires understanding the seasons, what your fishing for, the climate, many factors but its the difference between driving a cheby in a parking lot or taking a Porsche on a track.

Enjoying ultra light fishing for bass in small ponds, etc. I really like a 6' 2 piece light or ultralight rod with a spinning reel loaded with 4lb test line (or equiv diameter if using a superline). 1/8oz or smaller baits, 4" worms, etc.

That said, if legal to use and you aren't a purist, I'd look at a nice ultralight rig that could do general "this is my hiking fishing rig" duty.

Otherwise I'd pick up a cheap flyrod kit with a 6 or 7wt rod/line setup.

You will learn many new swear words if you've never done fly fishing before.

Mine's a spinning reel.

I cast out bait or lures.
From the shore of a lake or stream.

My favorite was fishing in the snow.
Catch trout, clean them on the shore and pack them in snow.

BBQ back at the cabin.

+1... All my fishing is in warmer waters (no trout), mostly bass and crappie, and lately I'm mostly at my ponds (surrounded by growth...i.e. casting with a fly rod just ain't gonna happen). If not doing that, I'm on the front of my bass boat with heavier (10-12 lb) baitcasters. I like to cast long with pin-point accuracy. I would love to trout/flyfish sometime...I'd have to practice up on my cussin' first though
