taught the wife how to drive a stick in my 911

So after many discussions and conversations about the importance of learning how to drive stick in case of an emergency, she finally gave in and decided it was time to learn how to drive a stick. Mind you, she is almost 40 (38) and never driven a standard transmission. According to her, there's no reason to use your left foot while driving and thinks driving a stick requires too much thinking.

To keep it safe, we went to a large parking lot without any cars or parking blocks, just like 15 year olds do when they learn to drive for the first time. And for her, this was like learning to drive for the first time, but much better than the first time around because it was now in a Porsche. She actually got it down pretty quickly and only stalled once. There was a time though when a police car was driving by, where she just stopped and waited and waited and waited for another car that was far far away to pass by before she continued driving. But once she got the hang of it, she tried down shifting and reversing. All of which she did quite well.

By the end of our session, she was driving circles around me at what she would consider a 'fast speed'. She claims that getting out of the car was painful and her leg was cramping. When I asked if she liked driving the car, she said yes she did but it was painful and she only wants to drive it again if she really has too. She still thinks driving with her left leg is painful and requires to much thinking. But, non the less, the experience was worthwhile and I finally got my way.

true about the rental car. but it was a spare of the moment thing.

but i rather teach her the 915 gearbox then anything else, incase she has to drive it home one day from wine tasting, and i am unable to drive.

First of all, when it comes to a woman's age you NEVER round up. Second, you're a saint for not only teaching her but, teaching her on your Porsche! Glad she got the hang of it fairly quickly.

Brave, brave man. Kudos. I taught my wife in a 240SX back when we were dating. She won't be buying a stick for herself, but she still occasionally takes my stick shift cars for a change of pace.

she is very hesistant about reverse, it was her least favorite gear. i am glad i didnt have that experience.

My wife grew up on a farm and drove stick shifts all her life. I feel fortunate. She's done a couple AX schools and enjoyed them. We want to do more track events together when the kids are grown.

My boyfriend in highschool refused to teach me on his Tiburon so I bought a new civic and figured it out....clutch and synchros intact... so see, you truely are a great hubby!

I knew it was love when my now husband taught me how to ride a bike on his gixxer 750. As embarassing as it is, at some point I stalled and layed it down(gentley but, layed down none the less) he didn't even glance at the bike. he just picked it up off of me and made sure I was ok. No damage luckily, he kept me, and i never dropped another bike

You are lucky. He must love you. Some husbands would just leave you struggling under the bike.

+1. nice video but I want to see your sweet car on some spirited drive. haven't taught my wife yet on the 911. I taught my 17 year old son last summer in it though and when he got his watercooled car.... it was a snap from the get go.

I dont mind her taking it to work. I actual prefer.her to take it when they send me out of town for work. So i can drive her crv, just incase something was to happen so the ride of shame isnt a far ride back home.

I taught my wife to drive a 5-speed in a '67 Alfa GTV. she did great and has not owned anything be manual since. She now has a 5-speed Boxster.

Patience and coordination are the key.
