Why is it illegal to commit suicide?

This. I urge all of you to make your wishes be known in a living will and appoint somebody you KNOW will carry out your wishes as power of attorney for healthcare. People think that a regular appointed power of attorney is enough but it is not the same. And I emphasize "trust". The reason being if you choose to be DNR, with no extreme measures to save your life, if your POA decides at the last minute not to respect your wishes and override your DNR, they can if you are not of sound mind (in a coma, not oriented secondary to dementia or Alzheimer's). It made me so mad sometimes because I knew what the patient wanted when they were oriented but because of family pressure or their own inability to respect the patient's wishes, I have seen many POAs of healthcare reverse it. I have told my POA for healthcare if they override my wishes, I will haunt them forever in my afterlife!

I have heard many people say it is morbid or they don't want to think about it, or their children don't want to think about it. But believe me, so less stressful at the end for everybody because they don't have to guess what mom or dad truly wanted. Saves a lot of family arguing and stress. Same goes funeral arrangements. So less stressful for everybody and you get what you want.

Unless the Pope calls for a crusade to go kill off some heathens. Then is must be OK because the Pope said so.

The pope did not write the 10 commandments, the pope is not above sin, and WTF does any of that even have to do with the original question or the correct answer?

I do not recall that scene where Charlton Heston asks "but can we still eat animals" and God replying with a booming voice, "sure thing pal".

Nor is it written in the Old Testament that Cows and Chickens are excluded..

Also keep in mind that it is Old Testament, eg, Jewish and let's face it.. Jews weren't opposed to Stoning, so that's another exception right there.

Frankly, it's a bit rich how people twist and bend the commandments how they see fit.

So easy to point to the bible, but who here hasn't married and then divorced.? Wasn't it untill death do us part, and what was joined before God cannot be broken? So whoever is free of sin, do step forward, heck, i don't know about your marriage Sammy, so i'm not casting any stones, but me, i never married.. So that's one thing i couldn't have pissed off God with

This is a pic of my best friend taken years ago.
We worked together, we hung out together, we even dated some of the same girls.
If anyone we knew saw one of us without the other being there they acted surprised.

He killed himself.
It still angers me to this day that he did that and hurt so many people. He should not have done that.

The OP asked a question. It was, why is it illegal to commit suicide?
I replied with the correct answer, which is: the 10 commandments say we should not commit murder. Our society considers murder to be a sin, and suicide is murder, so it is illegal.
Duh.

I didn't spell it out, figured this crowd had enough common sense to extrapolate that which is obvious.
Then you get your panities all bunched because evidently you don't like the truth.
I just answered the question.

As far as the ridiculous points you made in a weak attempt at distraction, I repeat: really dude?
Take the emotion down a notch and read what you wrote again.

Well that sucks, but it sounds selfish to be angry about it, he must have had his reasons, not saying they were good, or problems, and i'm not saying they were impossible to over come.. but in the end , he lost the most.

There's no denying that suicide in cases of , for example of depression is a tragedy.

But i don't think : the ten commandments are the default answer to all things considering suicide.

Especially not when discussing terminal illness, or people who end up paralyzed from the neck down... You can go look them in the eyes and tell em "Ten commandments buddy", i sure as hell won't come off with such BS when i see em suffer like that.

10 commandments mean effall to me. And seperation of church and state should mean that they shouldn't mean eff all to me either way...

Actually, this hits pretty close to many of us, as we have lost members of the Porsche community, and like Sammy, some of us have had it hit pretty close to home

To follow up on my story a little... I have to acknowledge Tweezers and her profession. The hospice nurse we had was absolutely invaluable during my father's last days. I can't praise the profession enough. This woman was a part of the family by the time it was done, and I really believe there is a special personality that it takes to do this work. I couldn't imagine dealing with loss like that over and over again. In the end, I was convinced that this woman sincerely believed that she was doing good, and providing a service through the most difficult of times for a family, and it really gave her a sense of accomplishment to help. I'm far from religious, but there's a special place for people like her.

Sure, but i just don't buy into the Abrahamic "you have to suffer your way to the end because god says so and thats that".

If somebody is suffering and there is no recovery possible, then if that person chooses to, he should be allowed a way out. His choice, not ours.
