Los Angeles Hike?
I'm planning to go hiking on Saturday (2/2/13). I haven't decided where, yet. Anybody interested?
Here are a couple I'm thinking of: - Shipwreck, south of Redondo: LocalHikes - Shipwreck Trail (approx location of trailheaed: Redondo Beach to Paseo Del Mar ) - Sandstone Peak, Western Malibu: Sandstone Peak « Nobody Hikes in L.A. (approx location of trailhead: Santa Monica to Sandstone Peak ) I'm new to the westside, so I'm open to suggestions. I'd like to get up into the Baldy or San Gorgonio area, but should probably wait until there's less snow. I have done Icehouse Saddle in the winter before, and it was pretty awesome, even if a little slippery. I'm out of shape and slow. It's better if you are too, or at least very patient. Trailrunners would probably not have a good time with me, nor would people who do Mt. Whitney as a day hike. ![]()

My favorite hike is in the Palisades. I think it's listed as Los Liones trail. Where Sunset hits PCH, go inland 2 or 3 blocks (north side of the street). The 2nd block in is Los Liones. I can't recall the name of the third street from PCH, but that's the one I take. You drive up through a residential neighborhood to where the street ends. Park there, as the trail head is there. Then hike up about 4 or 5 miles to catch the backbone trail that takes you along the Santa Monica Mtns. There's a lookout that is about a quarter mile off the main trail (it's well marked). It looks out over the western half of LA (to the south), the Pacific Ocean (to the west), and the Santa Monica Mtns (to the north). You can turn around there, or keep going to Topanga and beyond.

There are a crap load of trails in the Santa Monicas. There is a hiking guide that you can pickup (free), that lists all the trails.

Stretch out well before and after, stay well hydrated, wear good shoes that are broken in well.

For simple walk go up to Griffith Park and take a walk to the top of Mt Hollywood. All of LA and some of the valley can be seen from there. it is the highest peak in the city of LA. Hike up the face of Mt. Wilson from Sierra Marde. Our local mountains has a bunch of really trails that will allow you to get deep into the forest. THere's Brown Mountain trail along JPL. There are ton of stuff and some of them are tough. I used to be a Geology major at one time back in college, so I walked a bunch of the San Gabriel mountains.

If you go up Paseo Miramar Rd up the to the end up on the ridge and park, you can just hike the top to the lookout. It much is more scenic....unless you want to hike up from the canyon from los liones for the full hike.

I definitely want more than a two mile hike. 6-10 miles would probably be good, depending on incline.

Eaton Canyon was always good. Waterfalls and lots of shade.

The Dominator hike is cool... it was more cool when the ship was still standing (pulling old man card).
If you like that you may like the hike along the cliff at the golf coarse (some steep and some cactus). Santa Monica Mountain are great too... Never hiked Griffith park but have heard good things about it...

I appreciate the tips. For tomorrow I'll probably head to Sandstone Peak or Los Liones.
When the mountains aren't so icy I plan to hit Baldy, Telegraph, San Jacinto, San Bernardino, and San Gorgonio peaks this year.

I think you still need a pass from the ranger station to go to San Jacinto. That's a tough walk, damn.

Last night we found out some of my wife's friends were hiking at Will Rogers State Historic Park, so we joined them. We hiked about 7 miles. It was a really nice day, but not as clear as I would have liked.
I forgot my real camera, so all of these are from my iPhone. ![]() ![]() ![]() We didn't run into any mountain lions, but we did see a few deer from a distance. ![]() To the left of downtown you can see the mountains of the San Gorgonio Wilderness. To the right of downtown in Mt San Jacinto. To the right of that is I don't know what. It's not as big as it looks, just closer. ![]() In the center is the Will Rogers house from the earlier pic. Catalina is just peeking in from the right, and LAX is in there somewhere. ![]() Anybody know what this is? I think it resembles bear or cat, but it's small. The largest piece was just over an inch. It was all over the trail. Maybe bobcat? I have no idea. ![]() San Gorgonio over Downtown over the polo fields. ![]()
