Largest Glacier Calving

This is a little dated, but the Asteroid thread got me thinking about this. Just a great reminder of how small we really are. 3:30 to the end is good to get an idea of the scale of this event.

"Chasing Ice" should be a requisite movie for the non-believers to watch.

I walked out of viewing it and was fully bummed that we've already lost the war and can (let alone try to) do very little to mitigate the process of ice melting.

We will be leaving behind quite a different world than the one that existed when most of us were born and I sure hope that people wake up to the fact that we better start seriously planning for the climate changes we have caused and which some of us have already experienced.

Sorry for the morose AM post but it is difficult to think otherwise after seeing "Chasing Ice".

If you have a chance to see the movie on a movie theater screen (with Dolby or THX), you will be humbled by the power of the ice calving,

Humans did not cause this nor did humans cause the rest of the varied climate changes this earth has gone through over millions of years.

The concern before my parent's generation was the earth freezing over...they'd never get to have a warm place to live, the equator would become overcrowded, etc...

So what war is there? Its mostly just political BS to...spoil(rape) freedom. Its much like the over bearing "church" of several centuries ago. Its about political power, get enough people bowing down to their "icon", and they have power.

If you really wanted a "war" on climate change, rather than passive(government control of emissions), you'd go active, actually putting things in the atmosphere. You also need an "ideal" climate. None of the bozo politicians will stick up for the ideal climate that we need to keep, or change to, because once achieved, they lose their power. Instead, use the ghosts of fear of change. Seeing in history that change is naturally occurring, you can work some serious fear mongering with little effort. Similar to spooking tribes that don't know when an eclipse will occur that "you've hidden the sun until you comply".

Speaking of the sun, how the heck do we control that?

Some people enjoy the illusion of control. We are merely specs in the history of this planet, and largely powerless over our own fate. But hey, piss away your money on carbon credits (ROFL) if it makes you feel in control of your own destiny.

The climate of this Earth has been cyclical for millions of years. Must have been t-rex and his SUV.

I am surprised to hear this line from you since you are technically trained. Really, your last post is nonsense as it completely conflates relevant with irrelevant time scales.

If there wasn't something scientific to fear and study, thousands of jobs would be lost, Universities and labratories would close, and politicians would be struck silent.

Has it ever occured to you that the government needs us to fear global warming for the sake of building more fuel efficient cars, building vast expanses of solar panels, and huge wind farms with hundreds of wind turbines.

The only way the American public will change thier piggish ways is to FEAR running out of fuel (astronomically high gas prices), or FEAR an uncertain future.

I saw some myself in Alaska, nothing like that though. The sound is fairly strong. The effect on the ocean is also pretty impressive.

Paging Al Gore, Al Gore, please come to the front desk. Someone posted something that has been going on for millions of years, but to you, it's brand new. Al Gore, please come and explain youself. Oh, please excuse us, we didn't know you were busy counting your new millions and millions of dollars from your recent sale of your TV network.

If you had bothered to review the link you'd have seen the great change in the rate of retreat.

The knownothingism on a forum that supposedly includes technical people continues to amaze.

It's all about the rate of change that is very worrisome.
