Dunno...but even the original is jumping the shark.

Wow. I cannot believe that the helicopter didn't explode on impact. That particular car just set record at MRLS for production vehicle btw. Crazy video.

Hmmm. Even the Korean version is better than the US one.

That's going to leave a mark.
Hopefully one of our Helo pilots will fill us in on the whys.

We need someone to mix this with the Gangnam Style track.
I'd swear I saw this clip quite some time ago.

Didn't watch, but there's an old video out there of an Apache clipping the treetops for fun.
Pilot has a little too much impetus(aka: Italian Alps ski cable accident a long while back). -Co-pilot brings up warning: "can we make it?", and recommends pullup. -Pilot confirms "yes", then buzzes between small forest clearing. -Successfully clears the gap, but then warning buzzers appear of missing rotor parts. -Vid ends shortly after. |

As you guys can imagine, as a former helicopter pilot I've watched the video a number of times.
A few things. That is an old Cobra. I am sure it is in good shape but it is an older, single engine model. It has a single mast, teetering rotor system which is a bit difficult to handle in these type of maneuvers...you have to keep the rotor head "loaded: (positive g's) in order not to experience mast bumping, which is way worse than impacting the ground. I also never critique pilots based on crash video's. It is difficult to know for sure what was, or wasn't going on, any mechanical failures, etc. The maneuver is pretty straight forward, a simply rotor over or return to target, in this case a 270 degree attempt. I have done literally hundreds of these, and, in an earlier post, described how I almost balled up the exact same maneuver in an H-60. He starts really well, great pull up. He comes through the 90 degree portion of the turn in great shape but has exceed 90 degrees angle of bank. The nose also begins to drop pretty significantly, which is expected. What has begun to happen is that his thrust vector (in this case the main rotor disc) is not providing much lift and he is slowing and in a significant turn. He is going to run out of airspeed and altitude very quickly unless is breaks off the roll and gets his thrust vector adjusted. As he comes through the 120 the attitude of the helo remains the same when he should (my guess) be rolling upright and calling a wave-off. So much is unknown: He is in what is called the "dead man's curve" in helo speak. At certain altitudes and air speeds, combined with insufficient power available, there is a bad moon rising, you are along for the ride. A lot went wrong but then a lot went right. He got the bird sort of leveled and the main rotors stayed off the helo, which is key.

Paul, Thanks for your detailed comments and your earlier post also. When I saw the upper skid up over the fuselage from our angle of sight, and that close to the ground it wasn't surprising to see what followed. Glad to hear he walked away from the crash.

Say what you will but there is more excitement in that 3 minute clip of their Top Gear then then the whole 2+ seasons of the US Version. Maybe the pilot can come over to our country and give them a ride?
