Ugly Canadians...

Well they talk about the ugly American. Now I have witnessed the ugly Canadians.
My wife and I are going to Palm Springs and we both have aisle seats. There is a male passenger to the left of me at the window seat and there is nobody between us. The passenger in front of the man to the left of me reaches back to adjust the air nozzle. The man to the left of me says that it is not his to touch. An argument ensues between the two 60-70 year olds. The front passenger pushes the call button to get the flight attendant to judge this argument. The front passenger reclines his seatback and the passenger next to the window complains that you cannot do that.

Their voices are getting louder while the discussion is getting more heated. The flight attendant( think Wonderwoman - but blond and at least 6 foot tall). She listens to the argument and brings two more flight attendants as backups. She says"if you two adults want to like children we will land somewhere else other than your destination". They immediately shut up

Later in the flight I went up to Wonderwoman and told her she handled the situation very well. Sometimes I think I would like to be in a car for 4 days with my wife than be in an aeroplane for 3 hours with the chance of sitting near the maladjusted....

So what happened?... did the guy in front get to adjust the nozzle, and recline his seat?... or did the stewardess allow the jerk in back to win the battle?

The passenger next to me was technically right. The passenger in front of him reached back to adjust the air nozzle that was in the domain of the passenger to the left of me. The flight attendant agreed with the man on my left on that issue. However she ruled that the man in front could recline his seat if he wanted. The man next to me objected to that and said no more.He was wrong on that issue.

The reason this whole situation escalated is because the man on my left had no people skills - he was abusive the way he talked to anybody including his wife behind him. Some people do not know how to be pleasant about what somebody else does or does not do. I just love it when a woman in authority can put men in their place.
It could have got a lot worse.

They likely were from Edmonton. In hindsight we should have dropped them off at Calgary. At least one of them should have cooled his heels in a Calgary jail for 6 hours...it would have given the airport police something to do.

I wouldn't use the phrase Ugly Canadians, but you all certainly do drive fast on your way to Florida. Tailgating and flashing your lights. You would think they were on the autobahn.

Some people just suffer anxiety on airplanes and take it out on those around them. The fact that Mr. grumpy's wife was seated behind instead of next to him is a big clue. I flew back from China with a similar situation. An older woman that we knew just "lost it" and started hollering at and kicking the seat of the gentleman in front of her. I would have been happy to drop her off in N. Korea and continue our flight but perhaps a little Tylenol #3 would have been all that was needed.

As I recall, the gentleman who's seat was being kicked was a well respected Porsche mechanic.

I'm reminded of an international flight I had back from Asia.

The guy behind me took his shoes off and his feet smelled of roadkill. He then proceeded to wedge one of them between my seat and the airplane wall (we were both in windows seats). Spoke no English and ignored my repeated signals of pointing to his foot and holding my nose.

After realizing he just didn't care, I ordered a glass of ice-water. Moments later it spilled near the armrest, right on his stinking sock foot. Oops. The flight attendant brought him some complimentary socks. Problem solved.

Speaking of that....what the hell is the deal with people taking their shoes off on the airplane?

I had never seen it before but last Thursday the business traveler in the window (I was in the aisle seat) popped his shoes off as soon as he sat down. I couldn't smell anything but that's not the point. You aren't in your living room, keep your shoes on.

I think the reason is that peoples' feet swell in a pressurized cabin. They should bring light slippers(not too light!) to retain foot odors.

Ahem, I always remove my shoes on a long flight. Of course always freshly showered with April fresh socks. I hate shoes. In many Asian cultures shoes are for walking outside, never inside or seated. On some first class flights they even issue disposable slippers.

You're probably right, but I don't think it excuses the action. My dad flew 40+ weeks for year for a long time. He never took his shoes off. Though I know he has plenty of stories.

When I used to travel internationally a lot, I would take a change of clothes for the flight. I would wear a suit onto the plance and change into shorts or sweatpants and a t-shirt. These would be for 10+ hour flights. My clothes stayed relatively unwrinkled and if there was an unfortunate spill, no problem. And I definitely would use the Business class socks provided.

As a former FULL time resident of Palm Springs, I have lots of stories about the extremely rude people from up north that would invade the Palm Springs area every winter.....but that would probably be rude.

Same here. But I bring my own thick comfy socks. Feet do swell up, airplanes get cold and some of those amenity kit socks just aren't thick enough.

I almost always kick my shoes off on an airplane.
I usually wear flop flops too.
