Sharp big TV's

So we've been working like dogs to finally finish our basement (that's a whole nother thread ) and I've been given the green light to get a 70" tv for the entertainment area.
My question is on the Sharp 70"; I've never been a fan of Sharp but they seem to have the market in the 70-80-90" range. I looked at the standard 70" 120 MHz, and I don't really need 3D, I just want a good TV with WiFi and don't care about the bells and whistles, so is the cost to move to the 240MHz worth it?
I want to make sure there is no motion blur as I like sports and fast movies, so is getting double the refresh rate "better".

Let me know if you have the 120 MHz 70 or 80 and what they are like for motion blur.

Thanks,

Bob

I have the Sharp 70 3d, and it's spectacular. I have it in a very well lit room, with a large 8' bay window facing the setting sun, and no clarity issues at all. The 120hz is really not necessary for blur, as the human eye cannot distinguish much above 30-40 frames anyway. I've not noticed any blurring even up close. 3D football games will change your life.

Doing a basement right takes time! I just finished mine after dedicating far too many weekends to it and not my family.
I didn't research flat screens that big but I am very happy with the Panasonic Vierra plasma I picked up a couple of months ago. (55)
Low light levels found in most developed basements and price led me to this decision and the Panasonic's high rating from CR and various online home theater forums.
What ever you buy I am sure you will be amazed...

I am putting the finishing touches on my basement finish out as well. I went with a 65" Panasonic Plasma. Nothing against the LCD's, just decided to go plasma based on a great deal at the time. Ordered through Amazon and all worked out well. Low price, free shipping (all the way into the basement) no tax and even 12 months free financing.

i've got a sharp 70" model 732? i think. it was the only sharp 70+" out when i purchased it, so i didn't have the option of 3d or anything else. we watch tv for content rather than the tv itself, so it's been great for us and things like black not being super black aren't an issue. hd football looks fine, haven't watched any hockey since the strike years ago. i'm not a tv junkie and haven't compared it to the other models, so i don't know if i'm missing anything. fwiw i thought the 70" was huge when the box was first delivered, but now it doesn't look that big on the wall. if i had to do it again now, i'd go bigger, all other things being equal. hope that helps.

Funny how many people are doing their basements, I started mine in 2003 tried to get it done before my kids were born, and just got back after it over Christmas.
We are on a 3 month time table.

I did want a plasma first but due to other issues including weight I decided on the Sharp, when I'm ready to bring it home I'll get the store to throw on some sports and see how each is.

Thanks

I bought the same a little over a year ago & I am very happy. We all want it big, but be sure you don't overwhelm your viewing area. Do a search for panel viewing distance suggestions.

We were on the same schedule! I started mine in 2001 and really got back to it in the fall of 2011 (small bungalow, need space). Thought I would be done in 4 months (by Christmas) and ended up finishing the main space and bedroom by May.

Panasonic Plasma TC-P60ST50 here, because the motion blur of LCD's makes me feel like I need to get new eye glasses.

It can get to the point of feeling sea sick with LCD's, that is if I don't train my eyes to not focus and not to follow the blur. Basically, don't watch LCD and I'll be fine.

I had problems with the flicker of CRT tube computer screens too, and had to buy a rotatable 15" digital direct LCD back in 2000 which set me back $1,500.

My friend has a Sharp Aquos Quattron 60". It's okay, my main beef is that the "anti-motion blur" technology and HD sharpness make movies look like they were shot on video. It's like I'm watching "Young And The Restless" or something. Don't care for it.

Even plasma's have anti-blur modes set at the factory to "on". Every reviewer says to turn it off along with almost every other active software.

I have a Sharp Aquos Quattron 60 - I think it's the best TV I've ever had. I have friends drop by the house and marvel at the picture.

I saw a 90" at Sams the other day - sharp - it was pretty awesome too,

satin matte finish glass = no reflections from windows or ceiling lighting.

Glossy glass sucks IMHO, just check out many sports bars and you can see your face in the TV from even 12-15 feet away.

Yepper

Got a Samsung with the glossy glass on a Saturday morning, install it in the "sunroom" (no direct light after 11 AM), watch for a while, repack and returned it to Costco the next morning. Pick the Samsung with the satin matte glass and no problem even in the morning.

Got to love Costco, no question ask return (90 days), 2 years warranty and the cheapest extended warranty available anywhere.

^^^Watch out for Costco specials. Not only for TV's but faux Tiffany jewelry! Just learned of a lawsuit against Costco for this.

I can only mention that even the top names have to be viewed before purchase. In regards to Sharp, we picked up a 42" 120Hz 1080p LCD at BB for $350.. seemed great on specs, really bargain priced but only average quality picture. Kept it anyways. Also found a Samsung 50" plasma for $445 on clearance. Looked at the demo and it was terrible. Tempting price but took a pass. I always had decent regards for both of those brands, read good reviews but no longer believe them. These company's might have the reputation but they ceratainly have the low cheapo models too... something to keep in mind. No matter the price, have to get them set-up for the room intended and hope for the best or return.
