a friend of mine got jumped by thugs. IN his house.

San Jose California. my buddy is not a large guy. small vietnamese man. he came home from work to find 3 guys in his house burglarizing the place. he jumped on one of them and started swinging. the other 2 came to help, and my friend got his ass kicked. he ran out and found a guy driving and asked him to call the cops..turned out he was the "wheel man"..

it got me thinking. all my guns are locked away. except a few for close encounters. what is the "fine line" between having the gun accessible and having them available to the burglar?

hide them or get a fast access small safe? the idiots could have everything in my home..whatever. i just dont want them to have any of my guns.

(he said they looked like high school kids)

Every gun in a safe except the one you're carrying.

This. Wow, that would be scary. Is he O.K or did they really beat him up really bad?

he looks like he was in a big fight..black eye, puffy lip. he had to cancel on a party, because he didnt want his elderly mom to see him like that. i wish i was there..we both probably be beaten, but i would have done some damage..

wish we had concealed carry here, but no..we have to resort to very harsh language.

unless you are carrying, i don't see a good way out of that scenario. skeedaddling to a neighbors with a phone and a gun is pretty much the only option. though give the guy points for having the balls to jump three teenagers bigger than him.

there is a cottage industry out there building james bond type secret/easy access gun safes. would be nice if i could be standing in my doorway, push a button on my keyring, and have two loaded mac-10s fall out of the ceiling.

We do have CCW here, Cliffy. It's just hard to get. Tell your buddy to head over to the Sherrif's while he still has the police report and the shiner, and see if he can get one.

Isn't it wonderful to live in a utopian disarmed society? I'm sure he's simply leaving out the part where the police came riding in on instantaneous notice and apprehended the perps without so much as a struggle. That's the way it always happens, just ask Obama/Feinstein/Pelosi/Brown/Bloomburg/et al

Bummer.

Glad he was not more injured.

He made an extremely bad decision. Backing out and dialing 911 would have been the obvious correct choice.

Of course, only after telling them where the valuables are.

Seriously, I hope he now gets a good alarm system. Cops prefer silent in the hopes of catching them. I prefer a very loud siren so they want to leave.

+1 - only takes one guy on probation that doesn't want to gob back to jail and he may end up dead.

He should get a dog. Not fool proof but takes away most opportunistic burglars like the neighborhood kids. They'll even know which house has dogs.

Yep, my thoughts exactly. People of course do irrational things in the heat of the moment but that was an extremely dumb choice. He's lucky to be alive.

It's one thing if you're already inside your house and have an intruder, you probably fight them with whatever you have available, like LL Cool J. But if you're still outside and see an open door or broken lock and you enter, you're a serious fool.

You could say that making it more difficult to get a gun in California meant that the low life punks that robbed Vash's friend didn't have a gun either, or it could have really been a tragic ending.

Vash, glad your friend is ok. I will agree with the others, he shouldn't have left the house as soon as he realized there were people in it.

This is what's wrong with the mindset in this country. A man should run away from his own home when he finds an intruder? Are you kidding me? Do you think these idiots will be more or less likely to return? We might as well just leave our homes open all day so they won't actually break anything when they come to take our stuff.

My dad was a cop before I was born but then went back into the military. When I was young, I remember that he had a 9mm Beretta semi-auto and a S&W 357 around the house. When I was 12 or 13 we were robbed. They got the 357, but not the 9mm. We are also about 99.9% sure that we drove past them on the way into our neighborhood and that they must have had a lookout and left because they knew we were coming back.

After that experience, if we leave the house empty, even with the two dogs in the house, I either take my gun with me or lock it up. Even if I'm just taking the dog for a walk in the neighborhood, I don't want to take the chance of a gun getting into the wrong hands.

A man should do what's smart at any given moment, if he's smart. If you want to walk in on possibly armed intruders with nothing but your dick in your hand, go for it tough guy. Most smart people would call 911 and let them get caught in the act while staying alive through the experience.

Even if you were armed, do you want to get into a fire fight inside your house? You might lose, Rambo.

I see what you are saying

but...

Surprising an unknown criminal who is robbing your house is a bad idea whether your a 120# asian dude, a 105# girl or a pro-boxer. Getting killed for your stuff doesn't seem like a good way to go. Better to learn a lesson and survive to be better prepared in case there's a next time.

I call BS on you, Speeder. I bet you'd do exactly the same thing Cliff's friend did, because it's the natural reaction to the invasion of your home. I just don't see a man opening his own door, seeing an intruder, and backing out to run down the street to call the cops. I say you're full of shiit, and you're being a smartass contrarian, who has the benefit of hindsight to take away the reality of the situation. Stand in any man's living room when they come home and see what happens.

If there are 3 people in your house and you are by yourself outside with nothing but a cell phone, yes, you don't go in and call the cops. Even if you are armed, why risk that the burglars are too? Get yourself in a gunfight over household items? It just isn't worth it IMHO. Your health is irreplaceable. Valuables can be replaced, sometimes even with some help from homeowners insurance.

I am sure Vash's buddy reacted quickly and without thinking it through too well. I am glad nothing worse happened to him.
