iPad help

I'm getting annoyed with Apple. First they screw with my iPad, then they won't answer their own help line.
We have company-wide instant messaging through our cell service provider for messaging via our phones. I would like to use my iPad when I can because the key pad is bigger. After successfully using it a few times, Apple put a big "register for iMessage" banner in front of all my messages and I can't get it to go away. My iPad is basically useless for messaging now (unless I do sign up for iMessage, which is just one more unnecessary security leak spigot).
Does anyone know how to get the frikkin' banner to go away so I can use my iPad again?

You should be able to turn off iMessage in your settings... Ill check my iPad here in a bit for your.

Ah, mystery solved. I had restarted the iPad because of another issue and somehow it turned iMessage on for me when it restarted. Very helpful.

nope. iMessage is off and the banner was gone for a while, but now it's back. I'll restart again and see what happens.

edit: it's back. I tried with cell data on and iMessage off - won't go away. Turned cell data off and iMessage off - won't go away. z

iMessage allows you to SMS with other Apple products. Ex: if I send a msg on my iphone to someone else's iphone, it sends it via iMessage. The good part of that is: it doesn't cut into my cell phone provider's text messaging allowance for the month. iMessage also allows me to text from my non-cell enabled iPad to other Apple devices.

If iMessage is enabled, and you are sending /receiving an SMS from another iMessage equipped device, your sent message will have a light blue background. Sending a regular non-iMessage text will have a green background. iMessage only 'intercepts' messages sent to other Apple devices. Otherwise, the SMS is just a regular SMS. ALso - if your iPad is not 3G/4G enabled, you likely won't be able to send non-iMessage messages. So you may be having an issue trying to send a message via your ipad to a non-Apple device.

My suggestion: just turn iMessage on. it should link to your iTunes account automatically - ie: you don't need to register if you already have an Apple account, and if you are using the same account on your iphone and ipad.

It helps and it may come to that. But we are security conscious and I do not see the value in opening the door to our communications to Apple Inc. for no reason other than Apple demands that we do.

Are you sending confidential or secret information via SMS? Why are you concerned about Apple, when you have no such concerns about the cell phone provider?

If you are trying to keep company information private, then you really need an encryption enabled system, or something with greater security protocols. And that's why Blackberry is still around -- they still provide the most secure enterprise mobile devices.

I do have concerns about the cell phone provider, but it is a necessary evil. Letting Apple in is completely unnecessary.
And yes, I am being a stubborn old curmudgeon. I do not wish to use iMessage - for whatever reason. Maybe I don't like the letter M. I'm ticked off at Apple because I apparently have to sign up for their message system before I can use my own. Even if I subsequently turn iMessage off (how off is "off" once I've signed up?) what is the point of forcing me to sign up? It is all too big brotherish. Apple is beginning to act like Microsoft. Success seems to breed contempt for your customers.

This is all assuming there is no way of turning the damn banner off without kneeing before Apple and signing up for iMessage.

Patrick - are you sending SMS from iPad to iPad? If so, are the iPads wifi only? If your ipad is wifi only, then there you can use either iMessage, or a third party messaging system, which is likely less secure than iMessage.

Thanks for your patience Z-Man. We have 3 iPads, 2 or 3 iPhones and 1 or 2 non Apple phones in the group I need to communicate with. All of the devices are on our Verison unlimited data plan. I was able to send and receive messages on the iPad via Verison for about 10 days. I can still see the old messages on the screen behind the banner, then all of the sudden this morning this banner popped up and won't go away.

Ditch the iJunk for a better device. Apple is crap, go with a Samsung Galaxy or the new Google Pad...hell, even a Kindle Fire HD. All much cheaper, technologically equivalent or superior and not bogged down by Apple's insipid proprietary BS.

That may be the solution. I may have to open the door to Apple long enough to get the banner to go away, then slam it shut, and assume it is truly closed and not out there monitoring keywords so they can sell data to some marketer. You know what they say, if you get something for free, YOU are the product, and iMessage is free.

Not exactly...there are apps out now that utilize type 1 encryption (military grade) designed for Android phones. It's so good, the military is looking into dumping our BBs and going with this.

The Samsung and Kindle I have personal experience with; they're easy and great. The Google device, I don't have but have researched and it looks pretty damn good. And as far as proprietary goes...Google will never go there. They're all about open everything; it's practically they're business model. Apple has ALWAYS been ridiculously proprietary (it used to be worse), and that's not going to change anytime soon. Not to mention they're so far overpriced for what they offer, it's ridiculous.

Also, while I'm on my anti-Apple soapbox...let's take a look at thier company history.

Initial Apple with Steve Jobs--Excellent company
20 years without Jobs (give or take)--dismal failure of a company.
The return of Jobs--once again a market competitor with some really innovative ideas
Jobs is dead--iPhone 5 is released, utilizing technology that is 2 years old, and all other smart phones have already moved on to bigger/better tech. I really believe it's only a matter of time before Apple is a nobody again.

FWIW, Andriods devices are far less secure than Apple devices. Ask any corporate mobile department that is concerned about security. Apple is better than Andriod, but from a security standpoint, nothing beats Blackberry. For now.

The OP is concerned about security - so Andriod may not be a viable choice.
