Anybody know furniture? Is this chest from Goodwill old? New? High end? Low end?

Picked this up at my local Goodwill. They knew it was better than average and priced it at $60. My 20% coupon brought it down to $48, which seems pretty reasonable to me. There are no markings suggesting when/where it was made. It's solid wood all the way around. About 28" tall, 50 pounds. Drawer is dove-tailed. Any ideas?

Without seeing it close up, it looks like 1960's based on the design and style. Has some nice detail work so I wouldn't guess low end.

Faux Chinese-style chest, to me that suggests it wasn't high-end (novelty pieces aren't usually high end). But I agree, detailing makes it not low-end either. Quality piece, should serve you well and look good for a lifetime.

Yep. Not old, but you did well for a solid wood piece.

Agreed. I think you can find items like this at Cost Plus. Wood is meant to look like teak, but not sure that it is.

Regardless, it's nice and you made a good score. Enjoy!

I have seen similar construction (that brass looks familiar) on contemporary pieces made in Vietnam. Well made, good joinery, nice finishes.

It's not antique, probably a newer import. They go from $600-800 new. It's a Chinese Altar-Style Cabinet, good for an entryway or dining room.

Looks like you scored a good deal. I think yours is better than the one I posted.

it isn't Ikea quality or cheap Costo, or Cost plus import junk. Its has the traditional Chinese joints from the front. How about taking a pic of the back and under the interior? It looks to be hand made out of some type of their domestic Rosewood. For 40 bucks, its deal. YOu can't get the lumber to build the thing for 40 bucks.

We have a winner!!!

Thanks! That got me on the right track. Everything sold by the company in the listing you found is seriously inflated. But, having a description let me track down one that's virtually the same... except for a couple of details and color.
