Dame Shirley Bassey was AWESOME singing Goldfinger. Stunning, especially since she first sang it in 1964. The crowd was blown away and gave her a well-deserved standing ovation.

Called her a c*nt in the context of catty, nasty Hollywood/female gossip. I see the humor attempt but it came across, as published, as completely uncalled for.

No doubt Dame Bassey's performance was outstanding [as always] but her song "Goldfinger' is a bit different than "Skyfall" and allowed, in my opinion, for a bit more impact.

I'm not a huge fan of Adele but thought she did pretty good.....

I like Adele too, but I think her song was flat. It didn't build the way Goldfinger did. Also, it sounded like the audio engineers were futzing with the balance between her voice and the music, which caused it to drown her out a bit at bad times.

I just thought Bassey was in complete control of that performance, and dominated the entire room. It felt like no one had a choice but to stand in awe at the end.

Yep, both Adele's and Nora Jones' voices seemed to be drowned out by the orchestra. Shirley Bassey just blew it away with her old-school experience.

I always try not to watch it... But somehow it always sucks me in.

Ben got emotional... He's a passionate guy. Good for him.
I've been following his movies for years but I haven't seen Argo yet.

Quentin did well but I thought Jamie's performance in Jango got overlooked.
Denzel as well but I think his best performances are ahead him anyway.

Bobby Deniro looked old and tried but he still has that sexy lady by his side.

Mrs Obama did a good job. Damn she's looking good!

I'll tell you what I'm tired of... I'm tired of the screaming "divas" that masquerade as talented singers. From Mariah's dog-ear splitting squeals to Jennifer Hudson's "louder is better" howling. There's a reason talent lasts, but unfortunately, the newer generations don't recognize it.

+1
Shirley Bassey nailed it and give her great credit for doing it. Kinda of a coincidence but a few days ago was sorting thru my tunes collection and found a CD from 1999 - themes of James Bond or whatever. Decided to play it and noticed Bassey was the only repeat artist - Goldfinger, Moonraker, Diamonds are Forever. She almost sounded better at the Oscar's than the recording!

Thought Adele was excellent too.

For people that have two brain cells to rub together, this whole Affleck/Argo/Oscar/Obama (like how I did that?) fiasco was a very thinly veiled shill for some political agenda marketing and the Academy's consolation prize for Affleck ala Scorcese and The Departed. Gotta love show business!

Hollywood has always been about politics...

^Of course, that's obvious. It's the other way around that's now so blatantly obvious and disturbing.

Good call - I remember wondering why her singing was being "drowned out" as well.

I also believe the two songs are so different no matter who sings them Goldfinger will always be the song which allows for more impact. That last note by Dame Shirley was intense!

Agreed. The Skyfall song isn't quite written to build to a crescendo like Goldfinger. It feels like it's gonna, but then it falls away.

... and Hollywood has always been "blatantly obvious and disturbing." (see my first post in this thread)

The problem is you can't state the obvious about Hollywood because you'd be labelled a racist or bigot.

I never heard of her before this movie came out. It's the only movie of all those nominated I will make a point to see.

There's so much ignorance in our society about mental illness it should have more exposure - good for her and thanks Zoa for the post and video.
