Scammed by the Girl Scouts!

My darling 5-year old daughter is in her first year of Girl Scouts. My wife now hopes it is her last. It's GS cookie time, they had their kickoff meeting on Saturday. My wife and daughter come home with 165 boxes of cookies, with my wife totally fuming. Seems that they have changed their sales model to allow "immediate delivery" of cookies, which sounds all well and good. The only problem - they give you cookies, and whatever you don't sell is yours. So now the GS are guaranteed that each little girl sells at least 165 boxes of cookies, one way or another. Pretty brilliant from their end, looks like daddy is going to be gaining some weight.

Sorry about your plight, Matt. It's sad that they would pull a stunt like that.

It's mostly in jest Jim. While I think it's a pretty slick move on their part, we'll probably be able to sell the bulk of them. I'll take care of the rest! Unless they are those weird ones with coconut in them, then I'm screwed.

Hey, just add a buck to the price of each box, since you're fronting the money...

Have you tried saying "No?"

Boy Scouts are similar to this and it drives me crazy. I don't mind contributing to the organization but we don't have days free to sit outside the grocery store while people pretend not to notice us. Kudo's to the families that do, but if I had that kinda free time, well...

I think that practice may be "local" to your troop/council. The GS around here are still doing take-order style sales (I have to wait for my cookies).

This is the wife's department. She took my daughter to the meeting and came home with a truck bed full of cookies.

Then her "ride" should be a unicycle (or a broom..."ducking") imo!

I'm just here to "help"

stupid. How do you predict what demand will be for what cookies? Of the values that I want to instill in my daughter, being a beggar or being under stress of fulfilling a sales quota isn't one of them.

The door to door selling model really isn't fit for our times either. Other than our immediate neighborhood where we know everyone, no way in hell I'm sending my little girl around to knock on the door of strangers. There's way too many effed up people out there.

I feel boy/girl scouts are great organizations... however the whole selling of merchandise thing is getting out of hand...

I would like to buy groceries without being ambushed by some cute kid giving me puppy eyes and begging me to buy overpriced cookies/candy.

Of the parents cruising the office pandering their wears...

I have learned to pull my "diabetic" card", works every time!

Boy scouts was a blessing to me... growing up I sucked at sports so it was great to learn there are ways to get exercise even if I didn't know how to throw/catch/hit a ball, and learned first aid/survival skill too!

That's a local district thing, my daughter just finished taking orders, cookies are here sometime in late Feb. You guys are at $3.50 a box? The market will bear $4 here in the big city. I think my daughter sold about 140 boxes. If she wants mom and dads work friends, she goes to the office and goes door to door. She said that so and so's dad took the sheet to work, I let her know she can be proud that although she might have sold fewer boxes, she sold every one on her own. Not sure she understood so I let her know I would rather her bring home and honest "C" than a cheating "A", she understood. Good luck with the sale!

I don't have any girls but, my friends' kids wasted no time on hitting me up for them...I think I obligated myself to maybe 15 boxes on the very first day. I don't worry about the kids in front of the store, i have two small ones and I'm immune to the, "Sad puppy buy me this" eyes.

My son did one year in Boy Scouts, it was terrible. They did obscure crap like study the food pyramid to earn worthless patches. The local leadership was a joke. He joined thinking that he would be getting to go camping, fishing, shooting .22s at summer camp, etc. He did all of that stuff........with me. I finally convinced him that Boy Scouts were not required to have outdoor fun. I know this is a failure of the local leadership, lots of people have great experiences in Boy Scouts.

BTW, at least the Girl Scouts cookies are delicious. Boy Scouts tried to have him sell little metal tins of gross popcorn for $18!
