I can rarely (RARELY) spend 36minutes on youtube on any 1 video. I was enthralled with the narrative (the very definition of self-effacing) , the men, and the journey.

Thanks for posting.

When men were men.

Thanks for posting this. Truly amazing footage by Irving given the era and conditions under which it was shot. Good show.

Excellent footage and dialogue. I'm a sailor but I would likely have perished in those cold and wet conditions.

Thanks for the post, Capt Johnson also sailed the "Yankee" making many articles for the National Geo Mag.
He truly bridged two eras of sailing history and made that transition accessible to the reading public. A great if some what laconic story teller.

Cheers Richard

That video plays at the Age Of Sail Heritage Museum in Port Greville, Nova Scotia.
Easy to feel seasick, watching parts of that on a big screen.

Best

Did I understand correctly that a single sail weighed 2 tons dry?! These guys make the deadliest catch guys look like preschoolers.

and 20 years before that Josh Slocom did it alone on his 40' plus or minus boat, he has a great book about it.

While on the topic of great sailing stories. This book by Bernard Moitessier "The Long Way" Is a fun story about his sail 1 and 2/3 times around the world solo, non stop on his boat Joshua (named in Honor of Slocum). It started as a race around the world in 1968 then turned into his quest for a worthwhile landfall after a long sail. Amazing descriptions of sailing in the roaring 40s and furious 50s in the southern ocean.

Cheers Richard

and Jack London's The Cruise of the Snark, he read Slocom's book and wanted to do something like that but with his wife and a friend. He had a boat built for it but chose some people that weren't very good at it, the boat barley got out of SanFran Bay, it did finally make it to Hawaii where it needed a lot of work to go forward.

Good video. For a look 100 years before that, try Two Years Before the Mast by Richard Henry Dana - their attempt around the Horn and their time in Alta California was a very good story as well.

Two Years Before the Mast - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's a good one. Re-read it a couple years ago

I guess it should have been in green, I put the sig up there, I live in DANA POINT. It's part of the book. It just wasn't called DANA POINT in the book.
