Rod Builders: guides on top or bottom for spinning rod?
I think I screwed up my last spinning rod and put the guides on the bottom of the spine. I might have to switch the handle to a casting.
Like to hear the brain trust consensus. Bill K

All my spinning rods have the guides on the bottom.

99% sure the guides go on the same side of the rod as the reel. so on the bottom.
and the guides are different. casting, they are all low profile and smaller. spinning, they ride away from the rod, and start HUGE and taper down smaller..

Thanks, Vash.I was having trouble with the top/bottom thing.
Thankfully I find my use of casting rods has not been upside over for the last 40 years ![]()

I've been changing my spinning rod tips to fly rod tips for about 35 years. I find it makes the rod more sensitive to light bites.

One of the micro sized spinning reels with 2-4lb test line (or similar diameter for braided line) on a 8 or 9 foot 6 or 7 weight rod is a *great* combo for flinging little tiny spinners and such. Lots of fun to catch pan fish and small bass on.

When jigging you can actually see the bite before you can feel it. I take the stock handle off a factory rod and put a full cork handle on. Then tape the reel to the handle. The cork fits my hand better.

In the rod building class I took the instructor stated the spine is always on top. The guides go on the bottom opposite the spine when building a spinning/casting rod. The guides for a boat rod go on the spine.
