Son wants to take up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Theres a local gym and it has always intrigued my Son. Last week he finally bugged me to the point of getting him info. I brought him and a one of his buddies along to try it out. He had his first work out and the first half hour was conditioning - pretty much non-stop. I thought it was gonna kill them. The both played football and his buddy plays basketball. It was pretty evident they were both not in 'that kind of shape' but they still seemed to have fun. Then the paired up and worked on what looked like to me some basic wrestling moves with a twist.

The instructor was a girl, prolly all of 24. Yes she was a cutie and no I don't have pics! The boys had at least 20 to 30 lbs on her but she would throw them into various locks and show escape moves that made me laugh. After an hour or so the class ended. Both boys came to me and said it was the funnest thing they ever did and they want to join up.

Now I have to convince momma. Anyone have experience with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

No direct exp.
Many MMA fighters come from BJJ background.

BJJ is an excellent choice for fitness and self-defense.

I been training for a few years. Its a very slow learning curve and the first year is mainly conditioning and survival. I've also weight trained since I was 16, (now 49) so I was strong and thought I was in shape, but BJJ is the hardest thing I've ever done. It gets addicting and I think its what has pulled me away from the car. Your sons at a great age to start. The only downside is injuries. The running joke is not "are you hurt" but "what part of you is hurt today"

Krav Maga is cool, but thats more street self defense. It wont give you the conditioning of a ground grappler and if your going for self defense I would still go with BJJ. Just be sure and mix in some no-Gi.

BJJ is a modified judo, lots of ground work, grappling, joint locks, etc. Make sure the Dojo has super clean mats/floor. The clean floor is because they will be spending a lot of time on it and you have to worry about hepatitis and a few other nasties. It's best that you get your kids headgear to prevent cauliflower ear, it's not so much blows to the head it's for the headlocks, etc.
Tell them to get used to broken fingers.

I do BJJ, but I focus on Karate, my plan is to incapacitate an attacker long before we ever hit the ground.

Not putting miles on your car is like not having sex with your girlfriend, so she'll be more desirable to her next boyfriend.

BJJ is all about submission
Krav is all about The Mission: eliminate the threat. Very different and both have their strong point. With a good instructor both can wear you into the ground in a 1hr class. In Krav, holding is bad. Go ahead, get a nice grapple on someone who does krav......you wont do it more than once.

Good advise on the mats, I forgot about that. Shower as soon as you get home every time. HHI944, I dont want to turn this into a Krav vs BJJ discussion. I've sparred against fairly good strikers before and its the same every time...once you close the gap and take them to the ground its all over. Yes, sometimes you take a hit but usually you can get a take down and from there its snap, tap or nap.... This style vs style discussion has already been settled in the 90's by Gracie. If you remember the days before MMA, different styles competed against each other and I dont remember a KM ever winning. Gracie put BJJ on the map which is why every MMA fighter today incorporates a ground game. Not minimizing KM and used against an untrained fighter its no contest, but I wouldnt be the least bit hesitant to spar against someone who has been training in another art the same length of time I have been training in BJJ.

If he is interested in a martial arts sport, I would sign him up for boxing, wrestling, judo or even fencing. All Olympic sports. The mixed martial arts stuff is nice, but an Olympic discipline will be a better choice long term if he wants to continue it in high school and college.

Depends on what you want from your program, some feel that the Olympic, etc. are sports and more for show and others are true martial arts. A boxer would stand little chance against someone with serious martial art skills, they don't follow rules and plan to break, maim and/or kill things, it's true self defence.
DNBK has resisted involvement in the Olympics because martial arts is not a sport.

I agree with Rogan, I don't plan on going 8 rounds with an attacker, win or lose (or escape) it's over in seconds.

Lots of Thai fighters do/did fencing. They tend to box soutpaw as a result....
