buying a springfield XDS 45

went to my first gun show in OKC this past week end. wish i had someone with more experience with prices with me. i was really just looking. i was taking pics of guns i liked with prices. i realised i kept picking up the same gun. they had it for 568. i figured my gunshop could get me a better price and he did, 550, but not sure when i will get it. i wont be back home til the end of the month and i just sent off my paperwork for my CWP.

i cant believe what going on with ammo!! a box of 555 .22 shells was $70!! not sure what i am going to do aout 45's. might have to get my brother to reload some for me. i stopped at several walmarts from SC to OKC and ALL had empty shelves when it came to ammo.

I still haven't fired the Commander I got two mos ago because I don't want to use up the ammo, though I have plenty.

Sounds like a good price. You will love the handgun! I bought an XDm compact .45 a few months ago for $659. Does that have a 'cocked' indicator like the XDm?

The XDS has a loaded chamber indicator. Since it's a true "single action" striker-fired pistol, if there's a round in the chamber, it's cocked.

The XDS is smaller in all dimensions (except caliber) than the Colt Defender (3" 1911). It's a pretty impressive little belly gun.

So I guess the 'cocked' indicator on my XDm is redundant(and useless) since it has a 'chambered round' indicator?

Great guns, I've shot a number of XDs and liked them. I hope to get one someday. You can find .45, I've seen far more of it than 9 mm and .223. Just keep checking your local stores.

That depends if your XDm is a double-action or a single-action (I don't know, I know nothing of the XDm line--I'm only interested in the XDs because it's so diminutive for its caliber). But I would guess that it is single action--so yes, it's redundant to have both a cocked (cock?) indicator and a loaded chamber indicator.

I never thought about that before. I'll be asking Springfield about it.

Double action only is more appropriate way to describe a striker fired pistol
You can't load the chamber without precocking the striker so yeah the cocking indicator is redundant

To uncock the XD, do you have to pull the trigger?

I just purchased a XD45 and I really like it. I also have a Colt Gold Cup and I am really liking the XD.

I had an XD40 for about a month, and even though I liked the gun I was unable to hit the broadside of a barn from the inside of it. I sold it to my son who had it for about a month and he sold it for the same reason.
Great gun but for me it was only good for about ten feet and at that range I would rather use my hands and feet for defense.

The XDm can be "cocked" without having a round in the chamber. You can cock it without the mag being in the gun.

If there's a round in the chamber then the gun has to be cocked unless it's defective.

To uncock the gun you have to pull the trigger.

May need to adjust the sights?
I have an XD40 and can pluck cans off a log at ~50'.

my brother carries the Kahr pm9(?). i really liked the size of that gun but did not like the trigger pull. plus, i dont think they make a 45. i cant wait to compare my XDS to the Kahr. the XDS is a very small gun for a 45.

i have 2 brothers, one with a 911 and one with a 930. we drove the 911's to asheville last year and did some shooting. my oldest bro does competition shooting. we are planning another drive/shoot next month.

also did a drive/shoot with some others from charleston last year. we will have to do that again soon.

I don't usually use sights on a handgun so it either works for me or it doesn't. The XD for me was just a doesn't. Just as well since .40 ammo is scarce as hens teeth

Kahr makes .45s, though not as small as the XDs. The PM45 and the CW45 both fall into the "compact .45" category (whereas I would call the XDs a "subcompact"). They are similar to the Colt Defender in overall size, but are significantly lighter in weight.

I think you're probably in the minority on the Kahr trigger--Kahr is known for a very smooth trigger pull. Unless your brother has a NY version, which has a 13lb. trigger due to the NYPD's inability to control their trigger fingers.

Here's my response from Springfield...

Don,

If you rack the slide on your XD(M) it will be cocked and therefore the status indicator will show and can be felt, but you do not need a round in the chamber to do this, like for practice. Therefore we also offer the loaded chamber indicator so you can check both areas for safety as well as firing.

Have a great day!
