OT please keep it here for one day

I would just like the oppurtunity to say "I feel like a trouble maker" and its probably my own fault. However, most of my threads and responses start out with a sincere question or remark. I resent the fact that my presence has become a bit of a joke. I have learned alot from most of you guys and would like to continue to do so.

I really do not intend to 'tick' anyone off it just happens. Perhaps I am to nieve, or maybe just plain ignorant I dont know. I do like to participate in many discussions, maybe I dont belong so heres a chance to let me know. Speak your mind, clear the air.

Superman 07-08-2002 01:49 PM

Sometimes you don't sound so sweet, BigB, but you're okay. There have been some out-and-out jerks in our midst, but they have all been chased off. There is no one on this Board that I feel detracts from the experience. Everyone adds, in one way or another.

Jim Sims 07-08-2002 02:06 PM

I suggest you stay with us. Ask your questions in good faith and politely state your opinions. It's easy to get extreme and there's really no point to it. The magic (and danger) of a BBS is you'll get heard (read); you do not have to yell or push. In the end its about respect, manners, patience and interest in 911's (or their derivatives)! Cheers, Jim:D

old_skul 07-08-2002 02:22 PM

Hmmm, who were some of the out-and-out jerks, Super? I'm still here....;)

Obin's gone though, and he was capabile of some professional-level juvenility.

avi8torny 07-08-2002 02:26 PM

I believe you might be suffering from a dose of Paranoia........a little ribbing and slight bantering to make a point is humorous once and a while. I originally thought you're user name was short for Big Pain in the ass until I read what you do for a living in another thread.

Bill Douglas 07-08-2002 02:31 PM

Don't be so sensitive BigB. We all like to on this BBS. There are one or two *********s and you are not one of them. Have fun and enjoy SmileWavy

BlueSkyJaunte 07-08-2002 02:46 PM

The internet's a funny thing.

You can't tell whether the guy has a wry smile on his face as he types his messages unless he uses one of these goofy emoticon things. :/

People are much more eager to mouth (or is it "type"?) off in a forum because they can't see their audience, probably have never met them, and probably feel they never will. Somehow the filter just gets turned off.

PS: I claim a spot as one of the two official *********s. I think the only things I've contributed to date are regurgitating info on spoilers and incessantly repeating "I think it's your fuel accumulator".

kstar 07-08-2002 02:53 PM

BigB:

You gotta stay!

The problem with a BBS is that all of us are communicating via text. It's amazing the complex role the tone of a voice or body language conveys . . . and these things are lost in text.

Sometimes I think I come across as an a##hole here at Pelican, but I swear if I were saying in person the same thing I am typing most folks would understand my angle . . . and, perhaps, have a different view of my "text".

If you are ever in San Diego with that beautiful 993 drop me a line and we'll have a beer or three.

Best wishes to you and your family. :)

Kurt

zuffenhausen 07-08-2002 02:56 PM

BigB,

I think you should take a little more time to think through your questions and comments before posting them. A few examples of how your posts irritate people:

Your recent question "How fast is too fast?" was just a reaction from you because you got your balls busted in the "downshifting" thread. It wasn't a legitimate question and just added to the noise. If you honestly think that somebody was going to reply with a number, then you really are lacking the common sense you need to drive your car safely.

In the "downshifting" thread, you told us about a mistake you made driving your car. Then when you got some negative (but deserved) comments, you reacted irrationally, saying everyone must be perfect, etc. You missed the point entirely. I'm certainly not perfect and neither is anyone else here, but most of us wouldn't post "Hey, I'm not really used to my car yet but I was doing triple digits on a public road and sure I could've killed someone and balled up my beautiful car but forget all that, did I wear out my clutch?" Afterwards you continued your irrational behavior by creating a poll with answers like, "I've never missed a shift-I'm perfect." Childish and silly.

One last thing: your accusations of racism in the "downshifting" thread were quite appalling. That's a serious subject and you had no basis for your comments. The terms libel and slander come to mind.

Post genuine technical questions (this is called the 911 Technical Forum, after all) along with intelligent comments and I'm sure the knowledgeable people here will continue to be a good resource for you.

-zuff

Superman 07-08-2002 02:56 PM

None of you guys who think you are jerks, are really jerks. Mark, there's absolutely no hope for you. You wanna be considered a jerk, go somewhere else. We know you here. Obin was fine, too. I think I chased Otto away, but he and I have cleared that air, so I know he's not staying away because of me. I'm not sure I can recall any of the folks' names (gone now) who I considered 'persona non grata.' I didn't have to shoo them away though, because my friends here beat me to it.

Heck, I've been called a "dirtbag" on this Board. Imagine. Me, a dirtbag.

nostatic 07-08-2002 02:56 PM

imho you haven't taken *nearly* as much abuse as I have. My advice is to get a bit thicker skin, and when you post, write one response, wait one minute, erase it, then write another one. Often times your responses come off as inflammatory. If you are indeed kidding, you need to make it obvious. If you aren't, then you have to be prepared for the blowback. In a recent post you talked about using your fists to solve things in the past. Frankly, it shows in some of your responses. If that is who you are, and who you want to be, that is fine. You shouldn't complain though when someone comes back at you.

You asked for comment, so there you go. The web is a funny thing, and for some people, it is a difficult landscape to traverse. You could be one of those people. That doesn't make you better or worse than anyone else...everyone is different. We love you in a non-sexual, non-homoerotic, and pro-he-man kind of way anyway.

Where is Rarly when you need a good group hug? ;)
And besides, you need to stick around...I get much less abuse that way :D

Rot 911 07-08-2002 02:58 PM

I've been here awhile and have no problem with you or your remarks. I say stick around!

I agree - Obin was a major troll/attention whore.

The funniest part was that his trolls were pretty transparent, but it was amazing at how many people accepted his posts as genuine. The good-natured spirit of this board made it kind of like shooting fish in a barrel for him.

He was also an admitted petty vandal. My favorite post of his:

What goes on between you and your wife is none of our business!

kstar 07-08-2002 03:09 PM

nostatic:

You do have a thick skin! :) Thank goodness for that.

I am a bit amazed re how knowledgeable you have become in your quest for a 911! I wish I were as smart in my previous Porsche transactions.

BTW, think we could talk Wayne into a full rack of XServers? Sheesh, if he really doesn't want to learn something as simple as OS X, he could run all of the Windows stuff in emulation. :p

Best to you, Sir!

Kurt

P.S.: Hoping you find a really nice long hood "real" Porsche.

pbs911 07-08-2002 03:18 PM

OK, I say this and said I wouldn't respond, but two things came to mind:

1) This is the worst case of buyers remorse I have ever seen.

2) Based on your previous Boxster ownership we all understand your irrational responses.

Seriously, getting the written word to communicate exactly what you think you are saying is very difficult. Some of the members are just better than others.

Don Plumley 07-08-2002 03:21 PM

It takes a big man (no pun intended) to ask this kind of question - I have a lot of respect for that. Okay, since you asked, I'll reply.

As a mutual participant in the community, I'm anxious to read your questions as the answers are sometimes valuable to me. I've followed your progression from the Targa to the Cab to the 993 with much interest. Translation: Participate away.

But you do seem to have a bit of a knack for eliciting an emotional component distinctly separate from our mutual passion for engineering from Stuttgart. Not sure I have an answer, but I have a theory. I searched and re-read your posts for a few minutes. It seems you get a conversation going, feedback ensues, and you might get some good natured ribbing - like between friends over beer. And then Wham! You take what I perceive as disproportionate personal offense over a comment. Because instead of just saying "ouch", you have in a couple of instances poured kerosene on the fire and then fanned it a bit for good measure. And then it just goes out of control.

Personal experience: I had a similar problem with email a couple years ago. I'd read something and immediately respond with vigor and emphasis, and since volume does not work with text, throw in a few extra adjectives. Kerosene effect. My cure was to stop pressing the "Send" button - or for cathartic measures, send the mail to myself - then edit and send it an hour or so later.

This board needs people like you that are passionate about Porsches. I guess if you kept your passions directed at the cars you remain in relatively safe ground.

Sorry for the long analysis - But I've stayed out of the fray in a few of your posts before, so I appreciate the chance to share.

Don

this keeps getting better and better...

911boost 07-08-2002 03:46 PM

Hang around and don't get worked up about a response. In the litle time I have been around I have typed some stupid responses and gotten chewed / flamed for it and learned. But its all in fun, and I am learning so I vote you hang around.

{Plus I'd like to see what your next car is...)

Bill

k9handler 07-08-2002 03:57 PM

No you must go away....and give me your car before you go!:D

Just kidding of course, you should stay on this board!
But you can give me your nice ride.

I'm working on Wayne from a few angles. We will bring young Wayniken back from the dark side. Leave windoze he must. ;)

jriera 07-08-2002 04:02 PM

Stay.. freedom of speach (along with being responsible for your acts) should be preserved even here.

As someone else said before is more about 'style' than not about 'content'.

I have been 'on-line' for a very long while (more than 20 years) and it is very difficult to communicate properly (read emotions) while typing, looking forward to a video-BBS.. any takers??

rstoll 07-08-2002 04:04 PM

No thanks Jordi, I have a "radio" face.:)

michaelw 07-08-2002 04:10 PM

Although you do tend to go to the exteme sometimes, I feel for the most part it's been refreshing having someone new here mix it up a bit.

Fishcop 07-08-2002 04:11 PM

Hang around.

If I don't want to respond to someone, then I don't. This board is kind of like TV.... If you don't like something (someone) then turn it off or change the chanel!

And use the icons/emotion thingies, if you are speaking "tongue in cheek" then indicate as much.

There have been some real loosers here (can anyone say Tabs?), and I agree with an earlier post, "you are not one of them".

Anyway, we're all just jealous of your 993.

Zeke 07-08-2002 04:26 PM

BigB (Brian), you and I got our wires crossed once and they shorted out. But we got that straightened out easy.

I think some people post either when they are tired or have had a couple bumps and it doesn't sound like them per usual. One day they're antagonistic and sheepish the next. I'm not impuning anyone here specifically as I post on a few boards.

I'm surprised that I haven't received more criticism for OT, vagueness, missing the point, etc. The guy who catches my act the most is Wayne, mostly privately. And the thing is, he's always right. So BigB, if Wayne hasn't pounded you lately, you ain't seen nothin'. And too bad you sold the Boxster, 'cause you and I were the only Boxster posters for the most part.

john_colasante 07-08-2002 06:45 PM

First, definately stay. I like your posts and responses. Plus you have almost the same car as me now and I may need parts at some point.

Second, I ditto almost the same feeling as Don Plumley; whatever he said.

Supe, what kind of obnoxious bastard would have the gall to call you such a thing? Sheez. :D

Nostatic: Keep on rockin' in the free world, man. I'm your biggest fan. Then again, ask Zuffenhausen about my girlfriend sometime and you'll see how I can relate to you :D

Wayne: You host my site, dude. You're a great guy, I don't care what anyone says. ;)

Painta:I confess. You were an easy target in the "how fast is too fast" thread. I took advantage. Bygones. Take a deep breath before you post and/or follow up. Should improve your S/N ratio and keep the dogs at bay.

You want me to post pictures of a woman lawyer? You *are* a brave man, especially when it is my arse (or other anatomical part) on the line.

Your interest is duly noted, and our customer service team is working on your request. Rest assured that nostatic.fm always strives to keep the public happy. :)

pwd72s 07-08-2002 07:55 PM

HOOT! Nostatic? I've had the unfortunate experience of having been drafted for jury duty a few times. All I'm asking that you to post pics of? What lawyers try to do whenever they argue before a jury. Well, I'll admit, they have clothes on at the time...but they do tend to think jurors all have low IQ's. Having been in a few deliberation rooms? Not so! I sat on one jury with a member who really was, literally, a rocket scientist, retired from NASA...but neither defense or prosecution knew that. Boy, did he ever educate us on the "junk science" both attorneys tried to baffle us with... I was skeptical, so after the trial, checked this juror out. He was legit. Advice to your wife? Beware of jurors...some may really be rocket scientists..

nostatic 07-08-2002 08:02 PM

Yeah, but she's a unique one...she also has a Ph.D. in chemistry. I'm afraid you won't get any "junk science" from her, at least in the chemical arts. Now as to whether she uses her power for good or evil...that's an entirely different story ;)

I suppose that does set up an interesting pictoral..."hey, what are you doing with that Ehrlenmeyer flask? My, that is a big graduated cylinder!"

I better stop now, otherwise I'll have to get Wayne to delete this thread too :p

Kevin Stewart 07-08-2002 08:04 PM

Hey I enjoy reading your post, but the other guys are right, I only post to certain people because some of the guys can lets say Be a little tart, believe me i know what your are talking about i posted and asked a questions, what i got was a smart coment followed by a answer that made no since at all, it was a page long and the guy thought he was giving a genius answer but in reality he was showing his behind, i almost posted negaitively but i read several other things by that person, and he was the same all the time, i just stay away from people like that, but hey man there is no reason to leave because some of these guys show thier real A$$, anyway hang around, Kevin

Bravo 07-08-2002 08:10 PM

I am one of the lurkers around here and I have to say that BigB has got nothing on Nostatic! I mean that guy has taken it enough for all of us. --- Personally I like the posts even when they start to flame because most of the people are just trying to state their case using the typed word-- Not always easy to do . Something I try to do is imagine all posts as if they were talking with me about their car. Now to me Early_S is a great example of this beacuse he is always using exclamation points-- Like listen you stupid S.O.B. the spec book says 32 degrees!!! GEEZ! ---I honestly laugh out loud at some of the posts I read. And I love it! Keep up the good work. I need all of the info I can get about these cars

Dean

Don Plumley 07-08-2002 08:14 PM

Kevin,

Here's a few extra you can use: . . . . . . . . . . .

;)

And I agree, Nostatic takes a huge amount of abuse. Of course, knowing that he has a Ph.D. J.D. for a wife - I'd guess his hide is plenty thick!:D

Don

pwd72s 07-08-2002 08:21 PM

Hmmm...maybe Hef would be interested in a future pictorial? "Lady Lawyers"? (Shown out of their briefs?) After all, he recently did "women of ENRON"...(disclaimer...only reason I know this is that the cover girl is from Oregon, and the state's largest yellow journalism paper did a story on her.) Gawd, what can I say? nostatic? Your wife may be the brightest woman on the planet...but Senator Hillary has claimed that spot. Your wife will have to fight for the title! Anybody care to guess the Vegas odds?

nostatic 07-08-2002 08:23 PM

Well if she takes over Hillary's spot, does that mean I have to get Monica to wet my cigars?

I demand a recount!
