Miami sets curfew for kids

So kids are not allowed out past 11pm on school nights, and midnight on weekends.
Initially sounds like a good idea, but could this be the frog on the stove trick?

Well it's a silly law if you ask me because it has the antidote built in

"Other exemptions are if a child is helping in an emergency, traveling to or from a school or a religious, civic or county-sponsored event, is emancipated by marriage or court order, is homeless, is exercising First Amendment rights"

15 year old on the street , at night
Cop : Kid, how old are ou
kid : i'm 15 , copper !
cop : there's a curfew , you're supposed to be indoors by now
kid : hell no copper, i'm exercising my 1st amendment right!
cop : prove it
kid : whips out a sign "no more curfew!" and says , there you go , copper! naaaaah!

Why are you portraying this as a new thing? Many cities have curfew.

Sheesh, I'm all for civil rights, but keeping kids of the street on school nights is some sort of looming totalitarianism?

We've had a curfew in our town for a very long time. There are allowances for kids who work, school and church activities. It happens to be midnight all days of the week.

It is MUCH earlier at Casa de Lane on school nights.

I just heard about it and had no idea other cities had curfews. So I did think it was a new thing.

Personally I think it is silly to put a law against somebody being outside at a certain time if the only law they are breaking is being outside at a certain time. If they are breaking other laws, enforce the ones they are breaking.

I think we should keep the adults off the street after 11 PM and let the kids out. It will be safer. LOL LOL

I grew up in a city (small city, Boise in the '60's 70's) with a 11pm curfew. I didn't think anything of it.

I grew up in Manhattan, KS, population 40,000. We had a midnight curfew for under 18, I never thought anything of it. Anyone with decent parents wasn't allowed out that late anyway.

Although I don't disagree with the law . . . When I was 16-17, I used to leave at about 10 - 11 pm Friday night to hitchhike 150 miles to see my girlfriend. I usually got there around dawn. I guess my parent weren't decent. It is a tool the police can use. Let us hope that they use it judiciously.

While I'm glad it wasn't a big deal for you, as a parent there's no way in hell I'm letting my teen hitchhike to visit his girlfriend at 16.

when I was in high school there was an 11pm curfew for under 18yrs old in the town between my house and the neighboring town. we're talking 5 miles to that town than across the bridge to the next one. coming home one night we had to pass thru the curfew town to get home and got pulled over. cop checked licenses and truck papers and then looked at his watch... he then arrested me and my friend for being out after curfew and brought us to jail handcuffed. it was 11:15. had to go to court where the judge threatened to send us to reform school, having criminal records, etc.. there was only one road running east/west across south louisiana at that time so there was no way to get home without driving the 1/2 mile thru that town's city limits.. if the cop had not stopped us, we would have not broken the law and have been safe at home before curfew. that night was the first and last entry on my extensive juvenile criminal record. just like I was in a scene from Alices's Restaurant

Ours was just a curfew violation, they called your parents. In extreme cases they took kids to the police station and made their parents pick them up. Maybe if it happened enough it was a big deal. They never caught me, so I don't know.
