They were handed out for free at college campuses and military bases.

I'm guessing that you go to the all-you-can-eat buffet.
I agree, those fat people stink. |

I can think of a few things that will ruin my $30 steak much faster...
How 'bout having to see a fat chick wearing stretch pants while I'm trying to eat. We all have things that trigger us. Lighten up. It's not the end of the world!

Almost Banned Once
|
I smoke 4 cigarettes a day and I've been doing that for about 12 years. The problem is I like that time to myself. Still... I need to dump it once and for all.
BTW: You can still get fit even if you're a smoker.

You can. It's just a little bit harder as you age...especially if you neglect the fitness for a while. I'm currently in that boat myself right now. Not a fatty, but definitely not in the shape I want to be in, so getting my lazy butt back in gear.

The flip side of that coin is many, many non-smokers DO get lung cancer and heart disease. All in all, it's a crap shoot. The wise thing is to take care of yourself and not do the unhealthy, stupid, risky stuff...but not everybody takes that path; and those who do still aren't guaranteed their health/safety.

Death from Heart disease and lung cancer are possible side effects of smoking; millions of smokers never die from these side effects.
- fixed Lung cancer was extremely rare before smoking - many deaths of non-smokers from lung cancer are caused by 2nd hand smoke. |

Keep drinking the kool-aid. Apparently you don't think there are any other factors that could lead to this?

My friends call me, Top
|
I am a cigar smoker....and proud of it. I gave up cigarettes long, long ago but I enjoy an occasional cigar. My step-father smoked both pipes and cigars his entire life and passed away peacefully at 88 years old. It is just personal choice. Why do people eat until they're fat ? Why do people speed ?

I'm a research physiologist, but I bow to your superior epidemiological knowledge. You might also try reading posts before responding - in this case, you would have seen the word "many" as the very first word in my post. |

Jeez... a research physiologist?! I can't even spell that! I should have never doubted your intellect. I usually make a habit of blindly responding to posts without even reading what they are about. My bad. I'm gonna take a break and go read up on global warming....

I quit drugs, and I am not talking about just smoking a little weed
I quit drinking, ended up in the hospital for a week because my body was shutting down from the withdrawal I have one vice left, smoking, and I don't smoke as much as I used to, but I am still a smoker. People look at me like I am the walking plaque because I smoke, they can deal with it. I don't smoke in my house, my cars, or around anybody that my smoke bothers. I am going through a very bad slice of life right now and smoking is about the only thing that allows the rest of society to go on existing. To generally look down your nose at me, is your choice but remember my smokes are basically the only thing keeping me from breaking your nose. (that was meant in a humorous tone but as with most jokes there is some truth behind it)

Don't have a dog in this race, but with an understanding of the cascade of biological events that lead to cancer and death, you would never touch another cigarette. Read "the emperor of all maladies".

Oh I am well aware of the consequences of my actions and the stupidity of it. It's just that I really don't care right now.

Wasn't referring to you specifically Rick. Just smokers in general. Lot's of reasons why people do the things they do. Your life will reach equillibrium at some point...when it does, consider tossing the cigs. Right now it sounds like they help more than hurt. Good luck.
