cool memory's from an abstract source

I was hanging up and old picture of my Dad's today and I had to lengthen the wire on the back of the frame and I realized that my dad twisted that wire 45 years ago, it brought back a flood of memories, I remember the pic, it was something he did, I was there when he framed it and twisted that same wire, we hung it together, well I probably just got in the way. Brought a tear to my eye, I sure miss my paw. Funny how a little thing like that wire can take you right back to a time and place. I thought it was cool and I wrapped the wire back with the same twists he put in it.

Yes I agree on those memories.
Now I am retired I have time to reflect too. I like taking old relative pics apart from frames as sometimes there is writing on the back of the pics. Too bad my folks never put words on paper more. Too late now as I just have just a sister left. Both my parents were only children....

I have a bunch of my dad's tools, every time I pick one up I think of all the time we spent fixing things together. I sure do miss him.

Unfortunately, I am rather quickly wearing out the pair of leather work gloves my wife and I bought my dad for Christmas many years ago. He had even put his initials at the wrist band (RHM). He passed on May 15 almost two years ago at the age of 81 from cancer. My mom had me go through his shop and pick out the items that I wanted - the pair of gloves was certainly one of the more sentimental items.

After typing this - I just realized I'm not going to wear those gloves any more. I need to hold on to them as long as I can. I sure do miss him.

That sounds so familiar. I went through my dad's tools last winter. Picked out things I remember him using. He was so fastidious and kept things in his shop in perfect order. Dad grew up during the depression and never threw anything out. He had a drawer marked "scrap metal" and it was filled with little slivers of aluminum left over from fixing the siding on his house. It must have been worth all of 9 cents, but he kept it.
I brought the tools home and my employee stole them last fall. All those memories - gone.

I am going through all of that. My dad died just last month. Mom died 6 years ago. I am emptying out the house and the garage. I have numerous boxes of photos, tons of old "stuff" and a lot of trash. Why keep the original box and manual for a camera that was broken and thrown out 30 years ago? I have to fight the urge to keep a lot more stuff.

Sorry to hear you are going through that Glen. It's not easy.
The camera box - are we living parallel lives? I found this in my dad's stuff. It had a broken 70 year old Westinghouse iron in it.

One of the most bittersweet things in life...cleaning out the old house after both parents are gone. Little things do it to you. I opened a closet. On the inside jam were pencil marks, names and dates in mom's writing. Then the memory of she having my cousins & I stand there as she measured our growth over the years.

I broke down...couldn't do any more that day.

Thanks for sharing guys. My dad turned 71 last week and i'm really struggling with that. I'm lucky in that he lives just up the street so i see him all the time, but I know I need to take advantage of the time we have. We still love to help each other with projects.

He was a tradesman.
I can still recall seeing his hands holding some of those tools.

I hear ya, Finn...

I have the steering wheel from my Dad's Freightliner. He replaced it about when the truck turned over a million and a half. It has duct tape on one side and it's about as big as a barn door, but it was HIS. His hands holding it steady every day, year after year, mile after mile...

It reminds how hard he worked for everything he had and how lucky I am to have his same work ethic. I love that huge ugly steering wheel.

Oh we have that door as well. It was at my moms parents house. When we shut that house down 25 years ago we moved the door to my parents house. It is the door to dad's closet. I don't know what we will do with it. Every child back to my own mom from the 1930s is on that door. I can see my height compared to all my relatives as we grew up.

I will take it down and photograph it next to a ruler to keep it for posterity.

I have a lot of my dad's tools too. He put a little red dot of paint on some of them. He told me it was because there was a flood back in New Jersey where I was born, and it flooded the place he worked. He had to take his tools into work with him and he wanted to keep track of them. Every time I use them I know there isn't a problem I can't solve 'cause like he said 'It was designed and built by a guy who put on his pants just like you and me. One leg at a time. You'll figure it out.'
I can only imagine how hard it was on him when he got laid off, just like the situation I find myself in now. Only thing is, he had four kids still going thru school. At least mine are thru that and on their own.
I wish I could talk to him now.

I sadly just retired my parent's toaster. It is a 1940-something chrome Sunbeam that they received as an anniversary gift. It's pretty much been in continuous service until last week. My wife got shocked by it and my daughter reports some arcing when she plugged it in. I opened it up and didn't see anything obvious.
