Where are you investing $$$ now?

Just curious as to where you feel comfortable putting your $$$ now in light of the world situation?
Your stock market is supposed to be one of the best right now according to bus. news sources. Gold bars? Any ideas?

Land. I wouldn't look at houses right now.

I just bought 6 achres 50 minutes from town. Decent price and there are about 100 olive trees spread over the back half.
I'll hang on to it until I retire and see what happens.

Here is my theory. Please critique. I am 100% convinced that we will see inflation and increased taxes in the future. I don't see any path out other than this. As such, I need to hedge against inflation and reduce taxes. Assuming that tax law won't change too much, (I know, assumptions!) I believe a fixed interest mortgage is an ideal tool. I am actively looking for rental property to finance with fixed mortgages.

And. I refuse to manage them. I know this cuts a big chunk off my yield but I don't want that stress in my life.

Thoughts?

Defiantly not in any banks in Cyprus...

Stocks are a good long term investment. Pick a good Corp with a good product mix and stablility and you will make a good return over time. Most Bank stock is also good for paying a reasonable dividend. Do a dividend reinvestment plan and you will increase your shares over time for retirement.

Gold is a sucker bet. Too much volatility for long term.

Land is good if you can find a good location at a discount price.

I bought an old car and dumped $2000 into it

But seriously, if I had money to invest I would also buy land/real estate...

Yes Larry I think that a rental property is a good idea but....
-you need to look at it as a long term investment. My wife and I invested in a condo locally and it is below what we paid for it 7 years ago. However the rent goes into a joint account and it is $$$ we don't fight over.
The condo bldg. is professionally managed but I collect rent, set up leases and do my own ads. I can understand though that you want to have it managed. Cost about 10% of the rent.
- As I mentioned owning it locally is a good idea so you can keep an eye on it.
Some Can. people own property in Ariz. and it costs possibly $1000/month just to have it sit empty in the summer months.Avoid admin. costs by buying locally.
_ Finding good renters may take time. Fortunately our present renters communicate by internet even though they live 3 blocks away.
- Consider buying rental property that you would live in yourself if you had to or desired to later.
- Look at it as a very long term investment unlike the stock market.
Hope this helps!

right now most of my positions anti US dollar, set up to hedge against the dollar. the us is in a processes of devaluing the currency, and for the time being sitting on cash is a loosing position. I am in trading some stocks, but longer on ETFs, I am also long on the aussie dollar vs the US dollar.

^^^ So then Moses, just a simple little place to get away to for weekends?
We got into a vacation rental condo. It has upside potential in value, and once renting well will generate better return than most stocks recently.

Cheers Richard

Yes. It generates good income now, but when I retire I will not rent it out any longer. While I'm still working I get up there about once a month.

[COLOR="Blue"][B] This question clearly depends on your age. I have lots of my funds in a stable income fund that produces only small returns. I have invested in real estate and did well however that was a long term venture for me. Any stock i have purchased years ago are now doing well due to a good market.

I established a contra-tabs fund some time ago (it bets against whatever he posts in OT or PARF), and it has done very well.
