That is awesome how the bullet makes that cone of cavitation and it collapses so fast. Nature abhors a vaccuum.

"Smarter Every Day". This cat has some great, educational videos. I watched the AK one yesterday and then my daughter and I ended up watching several others. -J

Cool !, I always thought that any fluid in the barrel of a gun could split it wide open because of displacement speed.

But they are firing the gun in the water, not at the water.

Yes but apparently the most a bullet can go in the water is a few feet!

i am guessing that gasses escaping around the bullet in the rifling grooves, etc., might evacuate the barrel. i would never shoot a firearm underwater.

This is pretty true, The bullet from the gun under water never gains speed.

A bullet that has gained speed will take longer to slow down but also might re-direct off of the water or to the right or left

That is a great video. Not just some redneck shooting guns, real science and a good explanation of what happens.

I seem to recall being shocked at how deep the bullet penetration was as they bailed out the side of the landing craft.

There is the more circular bubble which is the propellant gas, but the cone shaped bubble is the shockwave from the bullet causing cavitation. That is why when it collapses there aren't any bubbles like there are for the bubble at the end of the barrel.
