New Addition to the Family....

My Daughter (10yr old) has been lobbying hard for a dog of her own. Her mom granted the request (without my buy in BTW - I would have allowed it be thats not the point). So after visiting sveral shelters she came upon this little cutie. A Chiweenie - a cross between the Chihuahua and the Dachshund. She is 10 months old and is the sweetest little thing. Very loving and doesn't bark or freak out.

First day home she did jump into the pool - at 52F it din't take her long to get to the side where I fished her out but not before my Son jumped in after her. Of course Momma yelled at him for doing that.

"Why did you jump in!"

"Cuz Dad told me too!"

"Why did you listen to him?"

"Cuz he's my Dad!"

I love that guy

So, anyways...here is Ireland (my Daughter names her - other than the fact that she found her on St Pattys day and I am Irish I don't see the connection...)

BTW - this lil girl gets along famously with my Choco Lab Indy. Indy is very energetic with her but gentle as well. He could snap her in half with one bite but he treats her very gently. Amazing how they know just how hard/soft to be.
The other dog, a 14 yr old Rat Terrier basically ignores the puppy and chooses to sleep instead.

I was worried thatthe Lab would hurt the lil gal but she holds her own. They were both inthe bathroom this AM while I was showering. I get out to dry off and I look over at them and the lil one is humping the head of my lab! He's not really resisting much. Granted she's a cutie and all but God all mighty FIND A ROOM!

He does play pretty rough with her - do dogs (big ones) just know how hard they can play before a serious issue happens? He could tear her in half with a chomp. He must just know huh?

Yeah, dogs are good like that...if they like each other.

We got my daughter a puppy (golden Lab) a couple years ago. My in-law's have an ENORMOUS chocolate Lab. They got along great, but being a puppy...he didn't when to give the old guy a break. So, when the older dog had enough, he snapped at him pretty good once, and our dog learned his lesson. The two have been best of buds ever since.

Labs being a retriever have a "soft mouth" so as not to bruise game.
Historically they are not harmful to people or other pets.

But that lab does a serious number on chew toys including tennis balls. He can tear and skin one in less than a minute...

Mine, too! He's shredded everything from chew toys and golf balls all the way up to footballs and basketballs.

I should have added, "inanimate objects excluded."

Very nice, pets can be a lot of work, but they are worth it. Enjoy your newest family member.
