I live outside of Tucson and had a bad scorpion problem when I first built our house. I started treating the perimeter of the house for Termites on a regular basis and I haven't seen a Scorpion in the house for at least a couple of years.

I've seen pics and video and work with a guy that worked in Iraq for a bit that has some stories about them. Big freaky looking things, but I think a tarantula is still uglier. Maybe I would have to see one in person to revise my theory.

The best thing about the bark scorpion is they don't try to run from you. You see it. Go get something to smash it with. Return and it will still be there. You can get within inches of the darn things and they just don't move!
I built on a flood irrigated orange orchard. I get a ton of the buggers!

I saw in a different thread (or somewhere online), that wasp spray makes a very effective self defense alternative to pepper spray, and will actually spray farther and more accurately than pepper spray and cost less doing it. Somewhere in the article, it mentioned that wasp spray would also kill snakes and mice, and I just bet scorpions as well without having to get close to them.

They basically do what you said in your second post. A team of men came over and spent almost four hours sealing every nook and cranny. It was expensive but at the time, I had a newborn and we were finding 2 scorpions a week in the house. Since then, the number has dropped drastically to only a few a year but I still hate the critters. I am not as paranoid as when the boys were younger and before my son and I got stung. I guess now I know what to do so I am not AS freaked out. But I still hate them and will try everything to stop them from coming to my house. The exterminator said that the ones I am finding might be "stragglers". He says they are able to stay alive for months at a time without food or water. And if they get one cricket or bug, they can last another several months.
My son got stung outside at night. I got stung inside. I was doing crunches on the ground late at night and felt a sharp sting like a needle on my foot, and saw it running away. Hurt like a mother the whole night. Weird pain. More annoying. Worse than my c-section incision pain. Burning, numbing, shooting pain up my leg and down the other. My arms even got slightly numb but not much. Kept me up all night. Numbness took a whole week to entirely go away. Hate the things! They creepy as heck too! |

Have you put down glue traps inside? They like to cruise along the baseboards. It's really rare to see a bark scorpion go up a wall. The can't grip very well on smooth surfaces. The down side to that fact is that they tend to fall off when you least expect it!
How did you resolve the one you photographed?

I was stung in the knee last year when I was in Texas.
I caught the little critter in a small box and gave it a nap in the freezer. It hasn't woken up yet.

Are you allowed to have any birds in your area? 3-4 Guinea Fowls will have that yard clear from ALL pests within a week. They eat anything. And are kind of neat to look at, too!

Tweeze, make sure the bottoms of your doors have a tight seal against the sill. I imagine the peeps who did the seal treatment on your house covered that, but lie down on the floor and look to see if there is any daylight when the doors are closed just to be sure.
Also, lots of critters get in when you go in or out because they're lurking just outside the door, then when it swings in, they scurry inside. So if you look down every time you go in or out, you might be able to stomp them before they get very far.

![]() My niece spent the night and we all went scorpion hunting with the blacklight flashlights I bought. The boys and my niece had a hey day! They thought it was so fun! They were calling each other the scorpion patrol. Don't think I have laughed so much in so long. But we killed 12 scorpions!!!! Ewwwww!!! I think we are gonna do this at least once a week during the warm months. Hey, at least the kids think its fun. I guess a learning opportunity too. We talked about nocturnal animals, why scorpions are so hard to kill, what they eat, etc. I am such a nerd! ![]() |

I'm down in my Az house right now. So far in 3 years I have not seen any and am glad of it.
Tweez, from what it sounds like you are doing all the right things. Sealed, spraying for their food source and doing the night hunts. Make sure they spray in your water meter box. Do you have a watering or drip irrigation? I was told if you do, it's best to run them right after sunrise so that things can dry out during the day and leave less for the scorps to try to drink on at night. They are opportunists and seek the easiest way for everything. Good luck.

12! I think you're on the right track! Keep it up and you have fewer and fewer kills. What'll be funny is when your kidlets start feeling sorry for the scorpions and insist you start catching them for later release!
DANG... I was looking forward to my home cooked Asian meal! ![]() PS - be careful if you kill one that's on the side of your house. Even a rubber mallet will punch a hole in the stucco with a firm strike! My neighbor learned this the hard way!

I used to put the sticky insect traps just inside the garage doors, one at each side. Two garage doors, so four traps. I would check them every day and get at least three in each trap. That's twelve of the suckers....EVERY DAY!
