What are you paying for internet?

I'm fed up.
We are SE Michigan in a 4G area using a Verizon "hotspot" air card.
The thing loses connection every few minutes, decides to disconnect on it's own, and decides to not connect sometimes. Very annoying, and a security risk if doing online money transactions (we don't). The device and the SIM card have already been exchanged with replacements.

Our current plan is about $80/mo. for 8GB.

We still max it out, even with semi-limited video usage.
Netflix is out of the question.
After reviewing an itemized bill, I suspect some of those days of high usage are pure BS.

It costs the ISPs an actual 1/10 of a penny to transmit 1GB.
We are paying 10,000 times that.

John: I live out of town a bit and my only option is a Verizon USB ModemAircard...I put it in a router and run 3 computers....

I pay $60/mo for 5 Gig......UR right, you really have to watch it to not go over.....If I used 10 Gig, the extra charges would be $1,250......

Sorry, I can't suggest options for you, but mine is pretty reliable....There is a Cell tower along the I-90 very close to my house...I made sure I was in a "Digital" area before I signed the 2 years contract....That was over 4 yrs ago......

Maybe check cell coverage of Sprint, or one of the other compaines?

I pay about $70 per month, with the taxes, for their minimum plan with 10 g per month.

Sat does not hold a candle to DSL or Cable, but I guess it's better than tin cans and string.

We are way out in the country and have DSL, although my neighbor one mile away does not have it.

We pay through our phone bill (Land Line), it is 3.5 MB per second for $25.00 per month. It is enough to watch Netflix at 480 without any problem. However, when the boys are streaming another movie from Netflix and surfing the web at the same time, we sometimes get a rebuffering on one of the movies.

I've noticed the speed varies and is not consistent. The morning is usually better than the evening.

10mb/s down speeds. $45 per month. Not sure what my limit on usage is. I stream Netflix daily and have yet to hit a cap.

20mb down DSL with Century link, $19/mo.

EDIT: and $30 for my IPAD. I also have a backup 4GE Sprint USB modem but the company covers that.

Like others, I'm rural with no DSL or cable in street. I put up with HughesCanSuckMe for 36 months, and had 32 troubleshooting service calls to tech support in India and Philipinnes.



Finally fired them (only took like 3 months of getting their run-around)

Tried AT&T wi-fi, didn't have the signal strength and returned it 3 days later.

VERIZON 4G Mi-Fi Jetpack 4620 kicks butt. I'm on a 18 gig a month plan for both Razr Smart Phone and home internet.


Speedtest.net from 2 minutes ago. It hauls assss.


Verizon kicks butt, do a google search on the 100,000's of thousand pissed off HughesNOT service issues.

I only have one provider on my street, Time Warner Cable. I threatened to leave for Dish, and they dropped internet phone, internet and expanded cable to $110/mo from $150. My internet speed is slow.

States are prohibited from regulating internet service providers because the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) classifies them as information services, not telecommunication services. The states only have authority to regulate telecommunication providers. As a federal matter, this is something that your congressmen may be able to address.

On a related note, I was informed by the state Public Utility Commission that regulation of VoIP service (not internet service) has been considered by many states. The issue is murky because there are four types of VoIP service and the FCC has preempted one of those types of VoIP service. The FCC has been silent on the other three types. If the FCC explicitly delegates authority to the states, it would be clear. If the state passed a law regulating the three remaining types of VoIP service, there would be legal challenges.

I'm hearing "why can other normal people watch Netflix, but we can't"?
"Why are we so strange?"
We'd both like that modern convenience, without breaking the bank of course, but I thought the movies were a few GB each.
Netflix doesn't post the file size, and surprise overage charges add up quickly.

In old flat: 100Mbit down / 10Mbit up Ethernet, 40$. No cap.
In house: 24Mbit ADSL (more like 16Mbit actually) 42$. No cap.

4G is available with "up to 80Mbit" for around 35$ a month but it's capped to something like 20GB. Gotta try it.

You mean there is something cheaper in Canada. Was paying $45 since July and was $33 before. They did not notify me of the increase and I threatened to go to the competition and is back down to $33 for 6 more months. This is high speed internet, not dial up.

50/25 from Verizon is $45/mo, but w/ the bundles I really dont know what it costs. Just tested 40Mbps/15Mbps so it's not quite as advertised.

Time Warner Cable 16.72 mbs tested. Was $39.99, then $44.99, then $52.99, now $56.99 over a 2 yr period. I consider this a predatory billing practice and am shopping for alternatives. Verizon has terrible service and worse billing practices in our area.

Virgin 4G anyone?
