Got my Nokia Lumia 920 Windows 8 phone last night

My contract with AT&T was up, so I got rid of the old iPhone 3GS, which I hated and got a Nokia Lumia 920, which is a Windows 8 phone. I'm a "Windows guy", so this phone fits me perfectly. It's got a huge beautiful screen, is fast and smooth, does everything I want it to do, intuitively and it's nice!

I'll have this phone for 2 years, so it's important to me that it not frustrate the living hell out of me like the iPhone 3GS and my wife and daughter's HTC Inspire Android phones do. So far, so good!!

Getting a 920 in a few days as well. Can't decide if I want the white or black. Beautiful hardware and WP8 looks very interesting.

Excellent choice. The new Win 8 phones are what the Win 7 phones should have been. I was a first day adopter and knew within a month it was a mistake. I eventually ended up on a Galaxy Nexus and love it.

But I now have and really, really like the Surface RT, so I see one of the mid-range Win 8 phones in my near future, Right now I am leaning toward the Nokia 820, but if the HTC 8S is a lot cheaper in a few months I'll go that way.

Keep us posted on your experiences. Sounds very nice so far.

What do you like about it? Comparing it directly to both Android and iOS I find RT to be a pretty distant third. I'm asking sincerely - I just am not getting it. WP8 I get, RT, not so much.

For "full disclosure" I am not your average user. I am a MS Partner and I rely mostly on a VPN and Remote Desktop client. Documents and spreadsheets are next on my needs with music and video way down the list. . . Except for old Top Gear episodes on the disk for something to watch when stuck in a motel room.

My iPad and Android tablets are great and a lot of fun. But for me they are more entertainment oriented. The Surface is productivity oriented. The baked in Office with total compatibility is great. IE 10 sucked in my Firefox Favorites and off I went to the Internet without needing mobile sites. Once Cisco and MS get together and produce the API's for a Cisco AnyConnect client, this will be a viable -not complete- workstation. Until then I am getting by with PPTP. Another thing I like I like is like is the mouse. I can't tell you the number of times I have wanted to edit something on my iPad I was typing and couldn't quite get the cursor where I wanted it. That is very easy now.

Also, I mostly use the Touch cover/keyboard, but it works pretty well without it, as a standard tablet, if you will.

Win 8 Pro will probably be the best of the Win 8 family, but the RT for me a a nice start, and something I can use 24/7.

YMMV

One last thought. . . I am very optimistic about Win 8 because with it, a user can go from desktop to tablet to phone with one interface and one underlying OS. That has the potential to be very smooth to use and grow all the market for each device type as porting among them should become easier and easier.

It's a large phone, but it's easier for me to hold onto and not drop. Browsing the web on a tiny screen is just too frustrating for me. With my eyes, the larger screen is perfect and the whole user experience is very positive! One of the Apple fanboys at church tonight played with it and smiled and said "If I didn't have an iPhone, I'd get this phone", which is cool coming from him!

You are lucky. I went by the main corporate store today to look at them and they were down to only black (I think). No red, yellow and blue, for sure.

Yep, I got the last red one. The store manager knew that I was waiting and I called him earlier in the day to confirm that the Lumia 920's had arrived. I told him "any color but white", but when I saw the red one, I really liked it. Anyway, the phone rocks and it's absolutely what I wanted in a phone, large screen and all! It fits in the hand very comfortably and it's smooth and fast response is impressive.

I am over thinking the color choice. I will be wrapping my phone with a rubber cover regardless. My Samsung Captivate wears a simple black rubber case and has survived dozens of drops over 3 years without a scratch. Plus the rubber cover keeps it planted where i put it.

So I'll go for the Lumia 920 in black - pulling the trigger on Monday or Tuesday.

Wayne, Thanks for the video. I'm learning about the capabilities of my Lokia Lumia 920 every time I pick it up and I must say that this is intuitive to me. There are so many things the phone "just does" that I love. Syncing to my Windows 7/8 PC's, and connecting to my car via Bluetooth are effortless. My wife and daughter's Android HTC Inspire will not connect to my car or synce to any of the PC's in our house, which is frustrating to me. My iPhone was not not a pleasant experience for me because I'm just not an "Apple guy"...

Hope Win RT catches on, or Nokia is going the way of RIM.

I have been a religious follower/owner of Nokia products since buffalo roamed the plains...

I was certain I would jump to a Nokia Windows phone when I succumbed to the dark side (move to a smart phone)...

However T-Mobile came through with a smoking deal on the Samson galaxy SII (free) so we went that way...

Gotta say I'm pretty happy with it (after a two week learning curve getting used to android).

Frankly I think we are a bunch of winy geek/nerds arguing about phone OS's while you average dork/dorket could care less as long as their phone can text/call/and surf the net.

I was going to get the Samsung Galaxy III, but the Nokia Lumia is a Windows 8 phone and I'm a "Windows guy", so that made more sense. My phone has 32GB and was $100 and includes a wireless charger, so it beat the Galaxy III there, too. So far, it's a great phone but we'll see what I tyhink in 6 months, then 1 year in. I'm glad to be rid of the iTunes "virus" and I can't imagine going back to Apple again!

Anyone who says the Nokia Lumia 920 is too big and too heavy needs to remember if you put a monstrous "Otter Box" on the iPhone 5, it will be bigger and heavier than the 920... Everyone I know with an iPhone uses one of those hideous "protectors" since the phone is so fragile... It's so ironic that people buy the iPhone because of its shape and size and feel, then "protect" it by covering it in a plastic/rubbery box... WTH?

I went two years with my iPhone 4 and no case, my current iPhone 5 also has no case and it's going to stay that way. It may sound rather trivial but the phone size is one of the biggest reasons why I didn't consider the Samsung or Nokia smartphone alternatives. I have no doubt that they probably do everything as well as an iPhone, but the damn things are too big to comfortably carry in my pocket.
