Fun stuff to do in Reno NV?

Well, yeah... gambling...

Flying from Lost Angeles to Seattle in September for a wedding...

Got a crazy idea... stop off in Reno for a few days on the way back just for giggles...

Good idea?

Me being a native SoCal boy been to Vegas a million times, kinda burnt out on that town.

Check out the lounge acts for cheap entertainment. Some are pretty good.

You just missed the Bar table championships...many of the world's best were entered because of the high level prize money.

Funny thing is that I've probably been to Reno 30 times, and I've never gambled. Way too much other fun stuff to do!

Reno Tahoe Annual Events & Festivals Calendar & Datebook

For September, the Reno Air Races, Camel Races (GO CAMELS - LOL!), Balloon Races, Big Blue Bike Ride, Pirate Crawl (seriously, this sounds like fun), Street Vibrations....

Pick your poison and have FUN!

Thumbs up

Virginia City is a kick, it's only 15 minutes away. The worlds largest silver lode was found there

The best thing I found about Reno was Tahoe.

Second the motions for Lake Tahoe, about an hour away, and Virginia City, also probably an hour away - it's a good bit south of town and then east over a small mountain range, and is perched on the side of Mt. Davidson, I think it is, which is pretty much a hollow shell now, having miles upon miles of tunnels bored into it. It's an interesting place with lots to see.

As for Tahoe, well, I prefer the north shore Nevada side, but the action is on the south shore. From Reno, one good way to get there is south out of town and then west up the Mt. Rose Highway. The drive around the lake is beautiful. On the California side there's a visitor's center and walk where you can see, during the correct season, salmon spawning up a small stream. There's an underground viewing chamber to give you a close look. Pretty cool.

There's also Truckee, on Interstate 80, which can serve as a gateway to Tahoe. Nice little town for a quick walk but not a lot to do.

This is going to be a automobile free trip, fly L.A. to Seattle, train to hotel, ride with friends to/from wedding, train back to airport.

Fly to Reno (Take taxi to hotel?) dink around downtown, fly back to L.A.

Other option L.A>Seattle then on the way back Seattle>Portland OR>L.A.

Wife is from Portland, they have a train from the airport to downtown where there is a bunch of stuff to do.

Just thought Reno might be an interesting change of pace.

We are not snobs, we like free lounge acts and cheap food if that is what Reno has to offer.

I would consider Laughlin but not a lot of flights in and out of there.

Check out the Harra auto collection at.

National Automobile Museum
National Automobile Museum

He put together a world class restoration facility, and did amazing work on his extensive collection, the cream of the collection makes up the museum.

Reno is a bit depressed due to the economy.....still some fun. Go to the high end places.

Avoid the high ink, low tooth indexed areas.....

Just googled Reno,

Yeah we would be slumming it... but slumming can be fun... as Mr Bob says they are hurting for $$$ and therefore the price is right.

Anyone have a hotel/casino they would recommend on the main drag (appears to be old 395)? I know that is stretching it with this champaign/caviar crowd but any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks!

For downtown, Virginia street area, I like Silver Legacy.

Other than that, the Grand Sierra Resort (GSR - get it?) is pretty nice without breaking the bank. Both are just a few minutes from the airport.

We stayed at Circus Circus, it's located right in the middle everything, and the kids had a blast at their in house midway playing the games where they let you actually win.
unlike the midway games at a fair, these games are fun and you don't end up spending big $s to eventually win a prize

Interesting people watching in the casinos.

Downtown Reno is a hellhole. IMO. I can't imagine anyone going there for fun. Makes old downtown Vegas look incredibly posh. That famous "Reno" sign with the teenage girls in front of it? Probably 15 years old. Not the girls, the picture. If you stand on the opposite side of that sign today you will stand in front of a condemned casino, but there's an upside because you can probably get whatever drugs you want.

The only redeeming quality of my trips to downtown Reno is that my personal driver parks in the alley behind the original JA Nugget and I can get an awful awful cheeseburger before I retreat to my 45-foot star coach to enjoy said cheeseburger on my way . . . away from Reno.

Signed,
Mr. Fancypants.

Definitely go to tahoe. It is beautiful. Great hiking areas there.

National automobile museum was also very good.

Everything else was very hot, very dry and very cheesy.

I did manage to see a rain shower that because of the heat you could see it NOT reaching the ground and evaporating about 50 feet up. Was an incredible sight.
