Coming to Michigan!

OK folks I need some input from the brain trust. I will be driving up to Traverse City MI for the last week of June. We have lots to do most days but I want to drive up to Canada and drive my 85 Carrera internationally.

I see from Google Maps it is about two hours to Sault Ste. Marie Canada from Traverse City. How long does it take to get through the border crossing?

What attractions are the ones to see? We will not have a long time to visit Canada.

I will be driving my 911 so I to stay on the paved roads.

Any suggestions?

Lighthouse tour along the coastal drive
Petoski stones and rocky shoreline (great lakes are really a cold inland ocean)
Leelanau Wine Cellars (good cherry wine)
Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes (much time)

Mackinac Island (much time/ferry over only/no vehicles/expensive tourist trap)
Great Lakes Shipwreck museum

I appreciate the suggestions.

We have lots of tours planned for the week.

I was looking for what to see in Sault Ste. Marie Canada.

We are doing the Mackinac Island, Petoskey & Northwest Lakes tours.

I did not want to drive up to Sault Ste. Marie Canada and visit the bus station or a shopping mall. There must be a cool spot the locals know about but is had to find on the internet.

don,t forget you need a passport to get back into the US. Many of the Americans I know don,t have one because they have never travelled internationally .
I also wouldn,t waste a day to drive to the Soo. Been there once in 1975 and there wasn't anything memorable then.

Not to disparage a fine town like the Soo, but it is probably not worth your effort unless you really, really want a good Canadian Tim Horton's coffee & doughnut (note CDN spelling). I have visited numerous times on business & once with the ex centuries ago for the Agawa trip. As exciting as it was, I would still have a hard time recommending that anyone, ever go there.

Agree, it's not worth the drive...even from TC. There is plenty to do around Traverse, don't waste the day IMHO.

Ok not much there, but...

We have passports, I want to drive my 911 in the lower 48 states and international. Mexico is out so Canada is it. I have driven in all the southern states and many northern states.

There HAS to be some tourist thing to see there.

Would be much obliged if you could post pictures of your trip. I'm interested in (envious of) the whole thing, especially Mackinac Island and Traverse City. Someday soon me too.

I absolutely loved Traverse City, can't wait to go back. If you want to take a nice ride, cross over to the U.P. and check out Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. I'll be checking it out next time I'm up there.

If you want to drive to Canada, you'd be better off going to WIndsor, Ont. Farther, yes...but at least there might be something to do there.

Soo is a pretty quiet city, although picturesque.

There are many parts of Canada I would love to see......

IN THE SUMMER!

Since I will be so close to Sault Ste. Marie, that is the only possibility. It looks like it will be a 2 hour drive up. Hopefully I can get through the border quickly. I don't know if that is a quick or slow process. We will not have a long time to look around.

I will indeed take lots of photos. I have pictures of my car in:

Sacramento, CA
Dallas, TX
San Diego, CA
Rocky Mountain National Park, CO (and at least a dozen other national parks)
Charlotte, NC
Hershey, PA
Savannah, GA
Salt Lake City UT,
San Francisco, CA

And many more places.

There really isn't much there besides the scenery. The Eastern shore of lake superior is definitely one of the more beautiful places to drive through. You could always drive up to Wawa and see the giant goose, but that's a couple hundred kilometers up the road (2 hours or so)

The border crossing shouldn't be a big deal; getting into Canada should be easier than coming back to the US. If there isn't much of a backup it should just take a few minutes; maybe half hour if there's a lineup.

You might consider taking a detour through Ontario for your trip back home; you should be able to get from the soo to Toronto in about 10 hours going through Sudbury. Toronto could be a great overnight stop, then back through to Detroit (4 hours from TO)

Actually, coming back to the US at Port Huron would be less hassle than Windsor. There are some great roads on the East side of Ontario up to Grand Bend.

I grew up in PH and we were in Canada to visit the strip clubs quite often.

For the trip home to Oklahoma I can't see going north for two hours first. Ain't gonna happen. It looks like we will make it to Canada look around, maybe enjoy a cold beer (just one) and head back to the hotel.
