" That was way more fun than I thought it would be uncle Freddy!"y
Awesome day here. Spent the day up at the shop and assembled a customers 930 motor. Then my nieces, and nephews came out to the house for a day in the country.
They are all private school kids who live in a trendy neighborhood in the city. I first took them quad riding, ( two boys 12 , and 15, and two twin 10 year old girls). They never rode before . The 15 year old learned how to use a clutch, and shift , he was so proud. I let the 12 year old on the small auto quad. Then we shot the 22 rifle, 22 revolver, and I let them crack a few rounds out of the 9mm. We grilled up some burgers and dogs, built a huge bonfire with all the downed branches in the yard, had smores. Then I gave the two boys a few bricks of fireworks ( various flowers, smoke bombs, and small crackers), and two lighters, and they went at if for an hour. You could tell they were having some serious fun. Now they are all crashed in my camper out in the yard for the night. The 12 year old is the one who said the quote to me. Their parents are in San Fransisco for the weekend, and we offered to watch them for two days. Owen told me he thought it would be boring out in the country, but he had a blast. 6 hours , and not one of them was on their 3 ds , cell phones, or i pads. The country,... it's good for the soul.

When I was a kid mom and dad would load my two brothers and I into the station wagon and drive from SoCal to Kansas to spend a couple weeks with grandma, grandpa, and assorted uncles, aunts, cousins...
We shot guns, hunted frogs, rode minibikes, went swimming in the lake. We grew up and my brothers kids only know family vacations in Hawaii. Now, Hawaii ain't bad... but I wounder if his kids missed out on something.

Great time for the kids, Fred. You're going to have to work hard next time to top that.
When I was 8 or 10, I went for a week to stay with my cousins on their farm (southern Illinois - late '40s). Great fun for me. The first night some cows got out and went across the road. All of a sudden I was awakened in the middle of the night and told we had to get the cows back. We ran across the road in the night not knowing the road had been topped with some oily compound that evening. We all went slipping & sliding. After we got up & got the cows back, we spent a good part of the rest of the night cleaning the oil/tar off with diesel fuel.
