The P-38 (x5)

From yesterday - I love this aircraft. Never saw more than two at a time before!

At least this time, they didn't stray to far from the airport. Might catch them when they leave

NICE photos Dave - thanks for sharing. One of my favourite aircraft as well.

Were they flying a "missing man" formation or is it just the angle the photos were taken?

You Boyz can say, "Thanks" to my ole man, cus during the "Big Un" he worked for Packard on the Merlins that power those P 38's as a Tool & Die man. If ya look in the Packard book under the war time production chapter there is a pic of my ole man on the factory floor toiling away.

The German fighter pilots used to like to shoot down the P 38's...they found them to be easy. But ole Jap Adm Yamamoto probably had a different opinionas he was being flamed by one.

I don't want to disagree with Tabdula, but did the P-38 have Merlins or an Allisons?

P-51s had more than one engine. The original was found to be lacking. The turbo or was it supercharged?...... English replacement was the schizzle. Then they figured out the bigger fuel tank thingy.....they could escort, defend and return with the bombers.

A similar attempt to cure the problems of the P-38 by replacing its Allisons with Merlins was quashed by the USAAF, after protests from Allison.[20]
