In other words.... A German soldier carrying a rifle in the presence of US GIs would have a life expectancy measured in seconds..

There were a lot of strange things happening right before the war ended. google "operation unthinkable" - Churchhill's plan to launch a surprise attack on the Russians to try and drive them out of Europe . Part of the plan included rearming large numbers of Wehrmacht POWs to join US, British and Canadian forces in the attack. Several US Generals including Patton supposedly endorsed the plan but Truman said hell no.....

Churchhill saw the cold war coming .....

Imagine what he world would look like today if they had gone ahead with that plan.

No USSR... No Cold War. No Berlin Wall. There would be Russia but it would have been democratic since the end of the war.
What about China and Korea?... Democratic or Communist?

Would have the US gone to the moon?

The mind boggles.

Another WW II book I read is "Thunder Below" (I think that's the right title) about a Sub commander who actually was awarded The Medal o Honor for his, and his crew's, heroic acts during the war. Pretty much totally true story of Commander Flucky. Great read. Eugene, I think, was his given/first name.

This book may have already been discusses on this forum...can't recall.

Back in my youth, I read just every book I could on WWII. I do recall reading a number of accounts of Waffen and SS troops going toe to toe with Wehrmacht branches. The accounts that I recall reading about were primarily on the Eastern Front.

I have many books that I recommend.

The Nazi Years (I think it may be out of print);
With the Old Breed;
Duty, A Father, His Son, and the Man Who Won the War;
Helmet for My Pillow;
Flyboys: A True Story of American Courage (James Bradley)

For a more heavy account;
Army at Dawn (One of my Favs)
Day of Battle;

Hal Lawrence, RCNVR, wrote a book on Canada's small boat navy "Victory At Sea" MacLelland & Stewart,(MTBs in the Channel, etc. ) The guys he interviewed pointed out many of the guys in small boats on both sides were 'Hostilities Only" who had been yachtsmen before the war and knew each other. It was said as long as you were captured by the Kreigsmarine, you would probably be pointed down the shore where someone would take you in and get you started on the journey to Spain and back to England. If the Gestapo got you, you'd be lucky if you ended up "in the bag". Regular navy guys seemed to have more sympathy for guys like themselves than they did with the Nazis.

Best

Yep, Army at Dawn is damn good.

No word about this on anything you can read online about the 17th Waffen-SS Panzer Grenadiers. This would have been a popular story in Germany post war. I'd be skeptical. Someone is selling a book ...

Actually, given the sheer size and armor advantage the soviets had in Europe in 1945 (and these were very experienced combat troops) it is quite possible (or even probable?) had the plan been tried, the next stop of the soviet armies would have been the English Channel.......

That probably would have depended on how fast a third nuke could have been made and the probability of a B-29 getting over Moscow.

Or equally possible Little Boy and Fat man would not have been dropped on Japan, but rather on Moscow.
All speculation, almost 70 years later.

I was going to way the same thing, and agree with 74-911, but didn't even give the nuke a thought. YOu are right

I can think of at least two Russian weaknesses, Logistics and facing a strategic aerial bombardment.

Did we have enough planes and were they capable enough to get over there to do any damage?
