Would you buy used brake shoes?

I wouldn't. Both of my cars are disc/disc.

Sort of like used brake pads, maybe? At the first vintage race at the CA Speedway a while ago, the guy that was parked next to Ted and me had a Datsun 510 sedan or some note and came in after only a couple of laps of the first Saturday practice session hopping up and down about the brakes that were grabbing, slipping and generally not working! Biggest trouble was at turn 3 where you drop from 140 to around 45 to turn into the infield section. Anyways, his mechanic sez "well those front pads didn't work on ......'s car and we didn't want to waste them so I figured we'd try them on this one"!!!!! We nearly died laughing but the car's owner wasn't so amused.

I bought used tires in college, when one was un-repairable.

I've used, previously used parts on cars. I regularly traded out sets of brake discs, then had the other set turned.

In fact, I think I have used "used" brake shoes. I had a junk yard car I was slowly installing on my college car. I know I took the disc brakes and drums off that car. I think it had recently had a brake job and the pads and shoes were nearly new. If I remember correctly, discs, shoes, drums, calipers, etc, all around, maybe $25...

I should have made a deal with the junk yard and paid a fixed fee for that wreck!

They can't sell used pads from the wrecker here, but if you take them off a car they will let you keep them, I knew a guy when we were kids that had used pads on his cars for 7-8 years.

I try to avoid cars with shoes like the plague. I hate to replace shoes on brake drums. Still, occasionally, there is a parking brake that needs replacement. I wish they'd all be tied to the pads.

That was obvious, but it made a good topic nevertheless!

Amen brother! Working on drums SUCKS. I'm going to swap my Mustang's rear drums to discs simply because I don't want to work on them.

I have used pads on the front of the 911. They were already on the fairly recently reconditioned calipers so I just left them on. Wow! I'd love to know what brand they are, they are REALLY good. Plus new calipers are a treat. I can take my hands off the wheel and slam the brakes on at 60 and the car stops fast and in a straight line. It had never done that before with the old calipers and pads.
