Dad and his brother at the museum on Dover AFB

B-17 flight June 2010 over the Holy Hill area

Sadly my uncle passed away from cancer 9 months after our visit.

Dad is steadily fading away as Alzheimers takes it's toll. He forgot how to stand and walk for awhile after a drug reaction. Fortunately therapy has helped him regain most of his mobility so he may still be able to get in and out of the Porsches this summer.

My Oldest Sister and Dad in Japan.

Korea.

Not sure where this is.

Great, brilliant guy. I think Hugh's dad must have taught my Dad at MIT. My father was in the Nuke Physics masters program when Hugh's Dad was an professor.

Next time we talk, I'll have to ask!

He is still running great at 84. He just got back from two weeks in New Zealand yesterday.

Here's a photo of my Dad. He died in 2006. I miss him dearly. He's the bravest man I've ever known. He join the army at age 17 (lied about his age). Served in WWII as a paratrooper with 4 combat jumps under his belt.

In this photo he was going to march in a Memorial Day parade but missed his group due to traffic on his way to the parade. The guy riding the bike is a Viet Nam vet. He was going to ride his bike with other Viet Nam vets in the parade. When he saw my Dad he said, "Hey trooper you missed your group. Hop on the back and you can ride with me."

What a great story. What a smile your Dad has.

One more from me. My Dad spoke at my "Winging" in 1984 when I pinned on my Naval Aviator wings. He was the Deputy Secretary in the Department of Energy at that time (a three star Admiral equivalent).

I had to fill out a questionnaire for the ceremony where they asked if there would be any senior military or government officials coming to the ceremony. I reluctantly mentioned my father. The XO at the time, a Marine LtCol, couldn't believe an idiot like me was associated with someone as accomplished as my father.

"I'm going to invite him to speak at your winging, Numbnuts:.

"With respect, Sir, I prefer you didn't"

"It wasn't a question, Ensign."

By the time I got home to call my father and ask him not to speak should the XO call and ask, the dye was cast, the XO had already sealed the deal.

"I'm going to speak at your winging, Numbnuts."

"Greeeeat."

I am in the back row, directly over my Father's right shoulder.

Seahawk, That is a cool story. I'm sure your Dad was very proud to speak at your Winging. Not to mention how proud he was with the fact his Son was getting wings.

Seahawk, I'm not military, so perhaps I'm missing something here. Why you would not want your father to speak? Group hazing or something?

Quite the opposite of hazing...there were a ton of guys in flight school that for some reason felt compelled to let folks know they were Admiral X's son, Captain Y's son, Senator Z's son, etc. The Navy, like the other services is very, very rank conscious.

It is a world full of "ring knockers", coattails, who you know and insider trading.

I finished number 2 in my primary class and number 1 in my advanced helo class all by my lonesome. The last thing I wanted was for anyone to know who my father was and think I had some advantage.

Even when I got to the fleet I was mum. I know that sounds odd, but there it is. And trust me, if my dad thought I would ever try and take advantage he would have been crushed.

Not a picture of my dad, but one that got away!

This is my Dad. When he was young, he split time between Danville, CA and Whitehorse in the Yukon territory. Never in the military, an arm injury as a teenager prevented that. Didn't stop him from much, just slowed him down a bit. He used to tell me stories about the nights that never come in the summer, and the northern lights in the winter. Probably sparked my love for Alaska (I sneak off there every chance I get). Usually a quiet guy, unlike me, LOL - but a helluva story teller once he got rolling.

Angela,

That was a great thing that you did for him! I remember. I hope that my stepsons and sons treat me as well.
