D3 Audi A8L Feedback?
My mom is thinking about replacing her Volvo 960 with approximately 200k miles. She has been thinking about an Audi A6/A8. We did look at a 2006 Audi A8 4.2L with ~70k miles for 19k. I listed the pros and cons below.
Pros: - Timing belt was done recently. - Bentley Service Manual is available for the car. - VAGCOM appears to support all of the systems. - 4.2L V8 engine appears to be very solid. Cons: - Air suspension system ($$$) - PACKED with electronics that may eventually fail. Has anyone owned an A8? Does anyone have any feedback about them? Do you think an A6 (C6 generation) would be a better car? Thanks! |

I have a D2 S8 but have done a little reading on the D3, the biggest scary thing about them is the air suspension. I'm yet to see a car with a reliable air suspension. Otherwise you get the odd electronic gizmo going bad, but it seems otherwise they are pretty good cars.
One interesting thing about my S8, it doesn't have a number of the same issues that the lower models have. For instance, despite having a similar LCD display they don't suffer from pixel fade. I can only attribute it to the fact that they were the top model, and there weren't as many corners cut.

That's very interesting about the S8. My B5 A4 suffers from pixel fade. I do love my 2.8L A4, though. It is fully loaded with xenon lights, lumbar seats, working AC, etc. The quattro with studded snows is INSANE and it has been very reliable for the 17k miles I've put on it. Perfect college beater so my 944 doesnt get trashed at college.
She decided that the A8 L was too big for her. Unfortunately, it looks like the Audi A6 (C6 generation) is off the table (chain tensioner problems, valve carbon buildup problems). So she has looked at a newer A4 (2.0T) and an E60 530xi. Both cars seem to be nice, although I am more partial to the BMW because it is much more like her 960. Does anyone have any feedback about the E60s or the 2.0T A4? Is the A6 as bad as everyone makes it out to be? |
