.22 ammo?

Has any one seen bulk .22 on the shelves where you live? I'm in Pittsburgh and haven't seen any in quite a while.

Thanks,

Bernie P

Nope. .22LR is going for stupid high prices right now -- people are asking (not always getting, though) 8-10x what it was before the most recent stupidity.

I'm willing to bet that anything on "the shelves" is either sold before it actually gets to the shelf (employee malfeasance) or is purchased by folks who are now making a career of hunting it down and flipping it on Backpage, GunBroker, etc.

500 Rd Colt 22lr 40 grain Ammo .22 not CCI : Rifle Ammunition at GunBroker.com

Is it actually selling for that price? $99 for 500 rounds? Really?

Look at some finished auctions. Factor in shipping and you're approaching that mark.

I'm still trying to figure this one out. .22 will be banned right before BB guns, why hoard it?

BB guns are banned in some locations.

I probably went through 10,000+ rounds 2 years ago when my wife and I were practicing nearly nightly in my shop (shooting into bullet trap) when we participated in a pistol league along with my IDPA practice. I and many others who shoot IDPA and folks who shoot 3-gun have been buying .22 conversion kits for our pistols and AR15's to be able to still afford to practice after the first ammo shortage in '08.

I probably currently have about 8000 rounds of .22 just for cheap practice. In prior years when I was not competing or on a "gun kick", a 550 value pack would last me several years of occasional varmint eradication and plinking. In recent times my wife and I have gone through a 550 pack in one evening out in the shop.

I didn't stockpile .22LR because I thought it would be the last caliber to experience a shortage.

My local range will sell you up to 200 rounds at a reasonable price, but you must shoot it at the range.

I believe Tim is right. The .22 is a fall back when shooters can't get centerfire ammo or that centerfire ammo is too expensive to train / plink with.

It is also easily hoarded, as there is little per round investment (compared to a centerfire rifle round of a certain caliber).

I'm actually having a lot of luck with .223/5.56 at a reasonable price. I can't find .308 or .30-30 at all though.

CMP has 5000 rounds for $260. That is still more than double what we should be paying...

Cabelas has been limiting purchases to 2 boxes/caliber. This shortage has got to be purposeful in order to keep prices high.

I'm glad I'm not in the market for anything. It is curtailing my shooting.

No, it's not.

It's simple supply and demand. All of the ammo factories are maxed out.

So, who is stock piling? Is it the government or consumers?

We definitely know the government is stock piling hollow point.
