Reviews of each are so contradictory, you have no idea which are plants and which are real. Our current hosting was bought a year ago and have only had trouble since then.

Timely thread. I just renewed my domain. I see sites that say "free domain transfer." I missed the part that you don't get to do free or cheaper domain re-registration. You just get a blind (?) link to your original domain where you have pointed it to your site. Be selective who you sign up for for your registration year after year before going into the merits of what anyone has for site building and maintenance.

Shaun, I have found out that there are scads of sites offering shopping cart site building based on open source software. What they are selling is templates and hopefully customer service. Volution seems to be fairly good at that.

Other sites (maybe GoDaddy) offer simple non interactive sites. I'm not at all versed in this stuff, but some sites are great for posting and maintaining a small informational site with some email. Great for individuals, clubs and organizations that don't want FB presence.

1and1.com is a pretty good place. I know a few business that use it and they are major ones, not just a mom and pop store. Price is good as well.

I use(d) godaddy, and felt they were always asking for more money, and wasn't pleased with their IMAP email support

I switched one domain to Ipage, thought they offered good bang for the buck and my mail server is much more stable....not perfect but better.....

I still have at least one domain with godaddy until I find a more perfect solution, or until I bite the bullet, and do the switch, probably to ipage for convenience.
