you ever watch TV show - Alaska, the last frontier?

i like alaska, so i watch. sure they make everything so dramatic. "we will die, we will starve!"

the show is interesting. they freeze their asses all winter. interesting, today they were salmon netting in a river. no bear guns on them. they talk about how the fish will help them survive winter, but they only eat the filets..they waste the rest.

i need to google earth it..i bet there is a city nearby.

one of the girls is sorta cute in a granola kinda way.

The one starring Atz, Atz II, Eivan, etc? It's a great show, when they took the barge up the river those friggen bugs were thick.

All these shows are a bunch of scripted fake garbage.

Step up your Alaska hunting plans and go see for yourself.

I hate outdoor shows. It makes hunting and fishing look like easy killing and completely misses the reasons why we are outdoorsmen, IMHO. It does not help our cause either, portraying our passion in such an abbreviated manner ...

I watch it. The work their butts off to put food on the table. They do seem to have plenty of power/farm tools so it is not as primitive as they want to make you think. Overall kinda hokey but fun to watch.

I like it fake or not. We were up in Alaska a couple of years ago but did not see any of this type of stuff going on, but that doesn't mean anything. What we did see was a harsh way of life in the smaller towns. The same reason people enjoy HDTV. I think its all a bunch of bull, and can't stand it. Poisons the minds of home owners IMO.

I also like the buying Alaska series. Shocked that some of these places have no bathroom, running water, or electricity.

They have supermarkets in town right next to the gas station so they aint gonna starve but it's still an interersting fantasy. It's fake as hell but no more than any other reality show. I like watching it.

One thing that drives me crazy:
Either Atz Lee or Eivin wears a hat with a red circle crossing out something, but i can't figure out what it is. Obviously some sort of protest but searches in the interwebs don't help. Anyone know what his hat says?

Alaso a little bit of interesting trivia:
Jewel (the singer) is Atz Lee's sister. She grew up in Atz senior's house.
Did not know that.

i like the show..but it is fake as all get out.

EVE was stirring food in a Le Crueset pot. i bet she bought it off of amazon. and her husband wears a $500 Sitka hunting jacket. bad ass jacket. i want one.

the show is pretty cool. i wouldnt mind spending some time there.

the Jewel thing hit me. my coworker,s friend took a roadtrip thru alaska. their car broke down. they nonchalantly told the story. they said a family helped them out. helped them fix their car. they said in conversation the man said, that Jewel was his daughter. it clicked.

alaska i gotta see. big 4x4 diesel. 4 wheel pop up camper shell..gear...just drive.

penciling this on my bucket list right now.

I've watched it a few times, pretty interesting.

Some pretty boring details to get caught up in... how do they power the freezers? Run the equipment, home brew fuel? They have nice gear too! Obviously they arent too far from civilization.

Sitting on my couch in the burbs it lets me get away a bit, makes me want to get up there and check it out.

It's probably Stop Pebble Mine. I've never seen the show, but that's a big deal up here in AK. I see those stickers all over the place.

Pretty sure that's it, thanks.

My current boss spent most of his life in Kenai. He's been here a little over a year. It's interesting to hear his stories and how he describes it up there. Different world.

I like to watch the show even if it is partially scripted. I like the old guy Otto. He seems to be down to earth and knowledgeable. Some of the things he does are downright crazy though. As far as the other members of the clan go Atz Lee seems like a poser. He is only interested in getting on TV and is not really there to live the "subsistence" lifestyle. The granola chick and her husband seem to more into the lifestyle.

They live real close to Homer Alaska on the Kachemak Bay. Not quite as remote as they make it seem but still not a great metropolitan city.

Their homestead is huge at around 640 acres. Combine that with no state taxes and the dividend money from the pipeline and it is almost worth living there in the cold and snow. The part about the outhouses is weird though. Seems to be everywhere up there outhouses are the norm.

There used to be an interesting series on PBS about a 60 yo or maybe 70 who built his own cabin, trapped and caught fish.Likely in Alaska. He was almost self sufficient except for supplies like flour and basic staples flown in . I cannot remember the name of the series but it is well worth watching. Likely filmed in the 1960's. The modern day ones filmed in Alaska not so real as you say above how do they purchase the tools they need?
They have boats, snowmobiles etc etc...|Still entertaining though.

Could the series you are talking about be called "Alone in the Wilderness"?

Seems to be available on the shop pbs website.

The permanent fund check was $800 last year. I think I'd get a lot more if it were linked to the severity of the winters.

Opinions on the pebble mine break between hippies/summer people and the rest of us who need jobs.

I have an indoor toilet.

As an Alaskan, I don't really watch cable shows on our state. But the Dick Proenneke video is pretty good. He probably gets more supplies than indicated, but its still a great view of a time that has passed. The book is good also.

There are two kinds of people who go to Alaska.

Those who will never, ever go back, and those who think of nothing but returning. I'm the latter. Been up there 5 times - can't wait to go again.

My last trip up there a couple of weeks ago was fairly cold. Usually early May is greening up and Fairbanks can even be flat out comfy. Nearly froze my fat hootus off on a couple of the rides during this visit.
