Sold my 911 today ...

Well it was a great ride, literally

It was just over 10 years ago I picked up this 911 and have had a blast bashing my knuckles, modding, driving and racing her, but today I watched her drive away and I have to admit I was a little sad.

I love the older 911's but decided to start on a new project with a Cayman. I was really happy to sell her to a guy "that's always wanted one" and brought the whole family to pick her up. (The last guy that test drove her said it was "a little too raw for him")

It's another saga on my Porsche story from a 944, to a 911, then add a Cayenne, now a Cayman....Let the new chapter begin

At least you aren't leaving the family. Very different cars, but both very good cars.

Very nice. I start to feel my Carrera is a bit agricultural too. Maybe its my age. Soon I will be craving a Tiptronic.

Glad you were able to pass on the 911 to a good new owner!
Interested to hear your impressions of the Caymen as you get some time with it, keep us posted.

Thanks guys,

Yes I was really happy about the new owner compared to some of the tools that looked at it.

The Cayman is great but different, it doesn't rotate like the 911 but still squats (not as much) when you get on it in a sweeper or on ramp. Gears are like butter and it took me a while to heel and toe due to the pedal spacing. The PASM is great and makes a huge difference in the throttle, suspension and clutch. The only negative thing so far is it trams in ruts.

New wheels and pedals were my first mod, then some exhaust mods and I will be on to suspension.

Not a bad upgrade if you choose to go this route.

Bob

No Cayman for me. I sold my SC two weeks ago and bought a Mini Cooper S Clubman. It's a really wonderful little car. For whatever reason, I was not sad to see the Porsche go. I must be over the infection.

Interesting. A guy pulled up the house last saturday and made an unsolicited offer for my 911.
It was a low-ball, but I countered with a price that was lower than I expected. Yup, kinda shocked myself.

We exchanged phone numbers but I don't expect to hear from hom.

Sometimes it's time to move on. I can't see myself ever owning another 911. I wouldn't mind owning some of the more modern Porsches including the Cayman, but the cost of maintenance is beyond sensible means.

Bob,
I made the same upgrade last July. In a nutshell - couldn't be happier. 2006 Cayman S.

Believe me - there are going to be days where you will MISS the sound of the air-cooled flat 6. You will be flooring it in 3rd and wonder if there's something wrong with the engine - it doesn't sound like you're on the front of a super-turbine.

Definitely look at an exhaust upgrade and intake upgrade (with SofTronic flash). The flat six just sings with the right exhaust and intake on these. The fun-factor increases too

My 2001 996 had an EvoMS open element intake and Cargraphic mufflers, it was by far the best sounding Porsche that I have owned. My '88 Carrera currently has a cat-bypass and a B&B 2-out, even then the 996 sounded better. The Boxster/Cayman are fun because the intake is just over your left shoulder, with the window or top down it can really tickle your ear. Dunno about the Cayman, but the Boxster has an intake silencer just inside of the body intake panel, removing it only takes a few minutes and makes the car sound much better.

my 2000 Boxster S had a plastic intake piece that could be removed for a more fun induction sound...

Yup, that's what I was referring to. I think one screw removed the body molding, then the plastic piece just pulled out.

Yep, the water-cooled flat 6 Porsches sound amazing with the right aftermarket exhaust. I just had a version of the factory sport muffs on my 996 and it sounded great. If you look at the factory headers, you see why. They are race inspired.

As a former Cayman owner, I do not think you will regret the trade you have made. The Cayman is so much easier to live with daily, and has all the modern features (including safety) that you need.

When I wrecked mine it was a really difficult decision as to whether I should get another one, or something aircooled. Ultimately the build quality made the decision for me and I bought a 964. They don't make anything like they used to, and Porsche is no different.

I wanted something without all the plastic, and that had soul. The Cayman has alot of sex appeal, and it has the capability to go around the track very fast, but the engineers left a lot on the table to allow the 911 to remain top dog. There is nothing inherently wrong with that, it just irks me a little.

A couple things you might want to do:
1.Extend the emergency trunk release cable into the driver's side front footwell in case your battery dies and you cannot get into your car
2.Buy a clear engine cover to show off the engine, and maybe paint the plastic intake red or yellow Cayman clear engine cover. - 6speedonline.com Forums
3. Become a member over on Planet9, they are the go to forum for the 987C, not RL or Pelican
