Damn!
My brother in law leads a hot shot crew from Lake Tahoe. He and his crew have been in Arizona for two weeks. I'm relieved that he's OK but simply heartbroken for the families of this crew. Tragic news. |

Just horrible news.
Those are all very brave men & women to fight a monster like that fire. I sometimes wonder if they should ever even try.

Most likely something as simple as a sudden change of wind direction. Not sure what the topography is in that area, but the fire probably got pushed around them, leaving them trapped.
These guys have ten times the balls that us structual guys do. They are dumped out in the middle of nowhere with minmal equipment, to do their job. RIP Brothers.

wind did shift on them, numerous thundercells in area. downward outbound winds from cells pushed air(wind) back towards town of yarnell. granite mtn hotshots caught when wind shift happened. most found in "shake and bake" shelters(dont know what they are or how to deploy look it up) some found outside of shelters trapped before they could make entry.
2000 acres last night, blew to 8000 acres 10 minutes ago. headed towards prescott from the south. 200-250 homes toasted already. forecast today and tonight samo. hi temps/extreme fire behavior. latest updated info go to INCIWEB.com wildland fires just plain SUCK!

a shake and bake shelter is basically a metalic fabric bag that you crawl into and pull over youself. Pretty much like a big sleeping bag. Theres a few different versions.
Supposed to stay in it till the fire blows over you. But if the fire is too intense and slow. you basically will just cook like a fish wrapped in aluminum foil.

Vin is right; a "shake and bake" is only good for light, fast-moving fires, ie a grass fire. If you've reached the point where you have to deploy one of those, someone has screwed up big time.

Horrible. We had a wind/dust storm last night but I didn't know about the fires. I can't imagine having to deal with a wildfire in the conditions I experienced last night.
May that crew RIP.
