eBay Now Charging for Shipping

I sold a spare rear bumper for my wagon in May. $100 sale + $87 to ship via Greyhound to Los Angeles.

eBay charged $10 as 10% final value fee in June. Seller took forever to pay but did so in June. So now eBay is charging me 10% of the $87 paid in shipping.

Called them up to find out why and eBay said they are now charging fees against total sale price of both the item and shipping.

Pure greed.

Never using eBay to sell anything again.

That's because too many people were selling a $100 item for $10+$90 shipping. Ebay will always get their $$. I agree that the time is ripe for a major competitor to clean their clocks, they have completed the task of fking the golden goose up the 6 hole.

Why? Do they plan on promoting an in-house shipping arrangement?

EBay has certainly become the next Home Shopping Network for the trailer park crowd. But, as long as they turn a profit, I doubt if they care what their rep is.

The reason, is people were exploiting the system.

it was annoying. .99 cent buy it now items with $49 shipping on 1/18th hot wheels was very annoying. They did this a long time ago. It makes searches much much easier not to have to filter through the skunks.

I thought they had implemented the surcharge on shipping last year. I also thought it was on rates that were over what their calculator showed, not across the board. Of course EBay could not be able to understand the bus or common freight charges. And those tend to be higher so that really penalizes the seller selling items that need to be shipped.

What i you sell a car to a distant buyer that has to be shipped? What this will effectively do is put the shipping outside of the deal and make the shipping the sole responsibility of the buyer.

It's easy to arrange your own shipping. Just call a courier to pick it up.

I've done it many times.

After 10k in purchases, PayPal now wants me to give them my bank account #s and become certified or I can't make any more purchases. I have not purchased from Ebay for several months now because of this. I would love to see a new competitor establish themselves.

Like Tim (and everybody, I guess) eBay wanted access to my bank account. So I opened a new bank account that I keep a $5 balance in. Then they wanted a "backup" credit card. I'm totally sick of eBay and I've turned to CL to look or and sell stuff. I do so hope someone sees this opportunity and comes up with an alternative.

If you don't mind me asking, what bank?

Around here it's a $500-1,000 minimum balance. Else, monthly charges of $10-15 (plus usage fees) begin whittling away at the savings.

Here's what I don't understand on the logic of charging for shipping on open auctions and why I think eBay is just greedy. I put my bumper up for $100 opening bid, no reserve, thought it would go for $150 and $200 was a high possibility. In fact only one person bid on it at $100 and it sold. The market determined the price. I didn't offer it at an artificial, low buy-it-now price to skirt fees.

I understand that eBay would want to crack down on anything Buy It Now, but an auction is an auction, there is no under-pricing of the product to cheat eBay out of commission. the market determines its value.

Who owns Webstore? Sure looks like the flea. I'm starting to look for other auction sites. I don't think I'm alone.

Gunbroker.com - not just for guns.

Simple auction fees, no listing fees, no required payment methods, they do offer a payment service, no sniping.

Only problem is because of some content and the domain name(s) many web filters block them for being about guns. A clone of the presentation software w/ a new domain and allow sellers to pick which domain the item appears on.

So... How did we sell stuff before eBay?

Newspaper classified ads, pawn shops and garage sales but we had a lot less junk cluttering up our lives.

The buyer cares about the total cost of the item, including shipping. That is what the market determines the value of. The seller can use an artificially high shipping cost to allocate that total cost between shipping and item, to manipulate the eBay fees. Or, could.

No such scheme in your bumper situation, but it is an unusual one.

I bought an item once, the seller charged an excessively high shipping cost ($45 for something that should cost $10-15). I told him I would not honor the bid. He asked what a reasonable shipping cost would be, I said $15. He offered free shipping, which I accepted. Sellers will bend over backwards to preserve their feedback score.

eBay reaches the largest audience. Try selling something obscure (like an old bumper) on a gun website. eBay is a business and businesses exist to produce profit. Stockholders require it. I don't see it as greed or ripoff. I see it as a somewhat logical response to sellers way overcharging for shipment to reduce the fees that eBay is entitled to.

Also....I believe it's Paypal that requires funding access ...likely to insulate themselves and sellers from collection realities. Don't think eBay requires any such thing.

Problem with CL is scammers and the animals that shown up at your door. None of that with eBay. Use their service, pay for their service. My thoughts...

Nothing (or nearly nothing) gets sold via auction anymore. The good deal days on FeeBay are long gone - basically it's a clearinghouse for merchants and everything is Buy it Now. Amazon prime is 100x better for this. Occasionally I'll go on ebay but it's rare now. Like most here I find it to be a PITA and I'm sick of their crap (PayPal's in particular). They're known for seizing people's money without notice (perhaps it's buried in page 657 in small print legalese so for practical purposes there's no notification), jerking people around with respect to account access and keeping direct, unfettered access to people's money. No thanks. Not worth the trouble.

Sometimes if you see a decent deal you can just go to the vendor's web site and buy it directly without wasting time; effort or money going through the eBay/Paypal system. Your mileage may vary.
