It's called conspicuous consumption. Paying a lot for something because you have a lot to pay with. This sale will be topped by someone who wants to be more conspicuously rich than this guy.

I heard from a friend of a big hitter that the ultimate game is to continue to out-bid someone at auctions just to dominate that another bidder. Even at a loss.
Now that's a power game.
