Not sure who made it, but that is typical of what Col. Cooper called a Scout Rifle
Lighter weight, bolt action - pick your favorite brand. Give it some decent open sights. Mount a low power, long eye relief, large field of view scope forward of the action. Scout rifle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Here's the pic, Vash:
![]() Hard to tell, but from the safety it looks like a Mauser 98-type action, so could be any number of riflle builders . . .

thanks.
so gun gurus; if i were to build a shorty scout rifle like that, i have to choose the caliber carefully? dont some calibers love long barrels? or is it dependent on type of powder and powder volume. i'm in uncharted waters here.

Probably a custom rifle. It appears to be a Mauser type action. .308 is a good candidate for barrels down to 18 inches. You will spend a pretty penny having one built though. The Ruger would save you at lease $1,000 over a custom seet up.
An AR10 would still be my choice. Just as accurate if set up correctly and the conveinence of an auto-loader and no need for a long eye relief scope. Still cost you more than the Ruger by around $700

You could do it on the cheap using a Yugo Mauser in 8mm, slap it in a new stock and use a no-gunsmith sight that replaces the military rear sight. You could also start with a Savage Scout if you can find one, or a Savage Hog hunter and add the forward scope: http://www.cabelas.com/product/Shooting/Centerfire-Rifles/Bolt-Action|/pc/104792580/c/105522480/sc/105523380/Savage-Arms-Hog-Hunter-Rifle/1369830.uts |

Dang. You guys had me thinking that Savage had released the scout in a left hand action. I was looking for my check book. -J

A couple months late, but here you go Vash:
![]() Nazi K98 barreled action in an unknown military stock someone cut down. S&K no gunsmith scout scope mount and a $40 Chinese pistol scope. Handy, not as light as I would like, but not too bad. |

I guess that depends on what you define as "long". For me a typical long hunting shot would be anything past 300 yards. My Bushmaster AR10 has a 16" barrel and I have it zero'd at 200 yards. I can easily hit targets out to 400 yards with this set up. Would I attempt to shoot an animal at that range, probably not.

I agree with you on this one. I purchased mine 3 years ago and found it easy to shoot, super accurate with iron sights or scope. Also, resale is really good as there is always a demand for used one at my gun club range.
