I did a similar trip (only in reverse) a few years ago when my wife ran in the Berlin Marathon.
If you can time your trip to be in Munich for Ockorberfest you won't be dissappointed. An amazing amount of beer gets consumed. I'm impressed with the German's bier drinking ability. Neuschwanstein is pretty interesting, definitely a tourist trap but worth the trip. It was the castle Walt Disney modeled for Disneyland. Bavarian Alps are beautiful. Nuremburg is worthseeing, although it's a working man's city and it has some interesting stuff to see. The castle on the hill (aren't they all), and the nearby catherdral that was heavily bombed in the war. If you can take a side trip to Rotenburg it's worth it - maybe a 45 min drive from Nuremburg. Extremely scenic walled medevil town that was largely spared bombing. Drive the Autobaun if you can --- that's another bucketlist item!!! You can use more time in Berlin -- tons to see and do. Berlin is really interesting, it's really 3 cities in one -- east, west, and the revitalized zone in between. Great price, you'll have a blast.

If there are not a bunch of asterisks on that price, I'd say its a screaming deal.
We're (family) doing a Germany trip in September. Airfare was over $1100 ea (from SMF, with layover in DEN) We arrive in Frankfurt 9/11, attend the Frankfurt Auto show 9/12-9/13, then go south to Heidelburg and Stutgart with visits to the Porsche and Mercedes Museums. Then a few days at the base of the alps in Fussen with perhaps a day trip to Saltzburg and Kehlsteinahus, then up to Munich from the 9/21-9/23, with at least a day at Octoberfest. Fortunately we're able to most of the hotels in Germany on Marriott points, because the same room we're staying in in Frankfurt is $618/night, and the Residence Inn Munich is $300+ because of the timing. Points rate is based off normal room rate (way cheaper) . Rental car is a pretty good deal, $35/day for a BMW 3 series through Sixt. Thats the German part of our trip, after Germany, we're touring south to Modena for a few days, then west to Cannes and the French Riviera for a few days, then a bit north to stay in a B&B in Bonnieux (the Luberon) for a couple days, then ending up in Paris for 4 days.

Dresden is a detour, but still worth it. Leipzig is still good and there a ton of well-kept secrets and total treasures in that part of the country. I'd skip Nueremberg and go to Bayreuth and Bamberg instead. N'bg sucks.

Wife and I just got back from Germany. We left Toronto and flew Iceland Air though Iceland, stopped in Iceland for 3 days. Landed in Frankfort travelled south through Heidelberg, Stuttguard then made our way down the romantic highway. We went south into Fusson then crossed into Innsbuck though the Alps.
We then left Austria and headed north to the Dachau Concentration camp (a must see) Then went up to Wolfsbirg to see the festivities for the 75th anniversary of the beetle. We the traveled to Frankfort took the IC train to Amsterdam for a few days then headed back to Toronto. What a trip, 3weeks and about 10 gallons of beer and lots of good food. The hotels ended up at about 90 euros per night, airfare was 1100.00 Canadian dollars ea. Car rentals though Europcar very reasonable. Can't wait for a return visit would like to have spent more time in the Black Forest.

Now in 993 land ...

If this is in the off season, make sure it isn't Oct-Mar. Guaranteed to freeze your butt off in the rain and snow. Not much daylight either at that latitude during the same time period. YMMV!

Nurburgring and Nueremberg are a good seven hours' drive from one another.

Yep, I made that mistake! happily went along with the plan to spend the day with family at Neuremburg, thinking I would have a chance to check out the track. WHOOPS
The trip in the OP sounds like a good deal if you don't mind having your whole trip planned out for you. |
