Getting rid of pickup truck and using car/trailer combo. Am I going to be miserable?

I have tried to go without a pickup truck over the years. And I hate it. I do a lot of my own work, and its so nice to simply hit the lumber yard, stone yard, dump, etc....and not have to think about it.

I don't mind driving around a truck, but the fact is it gulps gas, and often times I could get away with using a sturdy roof rack on a car. It would also be nice to have a proper car to haul my daughter and her friends around. I'm keeping my 997, but the kids are getting way too big for that, and many moms are none too hot on having you haul their 'snowflake' around in a P-car.

So I was thinking of getting rid of my truck and getting a W210 4matic Mercedes wagon with a trailer hitch, and getting a trailer that can haul 4x8 sheeting. I can use the car day to day, and when I need it, pull the trailer out.

Any thoughts on this? Has anyone else went the trailer route?

My truck is a 2000 F-150 XL king cab. Very basic. Vinyl bench seats, rubber floors....its a work truck. The other option is that I get a newer F-150 Super Crew 4 door.

If I was ever forced to give up all of my vehicles and only allowed to keep one, it would be my P/U.

Don't buy a fresh car and rent a trailer. PITA awaits you in that scenario.

Keep the truck. The cost basis has to be so low at this point there's no reason to lose it.

Buy a banger city car for $5K (or $10k, Mr. Fancy 997 guy) and transport the kids in comfort and safety, and do your man stuff with the truck.

Either keep it or get your benz and a beater Toyota to haul.

Keep the truck, buy a Camry or something to haul humans.

I'm still seriously considering keeping the 01 Tahoe instead of the 06 Mazda 3.

Makes no sense but I love that truck.

My truck is almost always empty, but there are those days I need something it right there. Rent or borrow a trailer and just go through the motions of hooking one up and don't forget parking is also a PITA. I think half way through this exercise, you will realize how valuable is it to not get rid of the truck. Personally, I can't live without a truck. How about keeping the truck around and get a use car with better fuel economy for your kid and friends.

All of my vehicles serve a different purpose but only one has earned the right to be in my driveway, that's my truck. Like Vinny said, it would be the last thing to go.
It would be cheaper in the long run to just get yourself a metrosexual fourdoor ecnobox for daily and people moving duties

For years I did the trailer thing, thinking I don't "need" a PU. Like others said, it would be the last vehicle to go after having one. Friends always told me...once you have a PU, you'll wonder how you ever did without...they were right

Full size bed.

We can put this to rest, because after sleeping on it, I realize there is no way I'm living without a truck. Sorry to waste everyones time.

Good choice. I've had a Land Cruiser that could (and did) fit 4x8 sheet goods in the back. PITA. I've had a 4x8 folding utility trailer that I used to haul stuff. PITA. We finally gave in and bought a 2012 F150 SuperCrew 4x4 that serves as our family car. If you want to keep a truck but need more space to haul people, I highly recommend it. We can carry six adults in comfort (massive back seat), tow our boat, and haul anything that we realistically need to. I installed a locking color-matched fiberglass tonneau cover as well as a Bedrug, basically giving us a huge trunk that I can still hose out if necessary. It is an awesome compromise.

It would take a serious lifestyle change before I could live without of my truck and trailer.
Do you notice you have a lot more friends after you buy a pickup? Get at trailer big enough to haul cars and you get even more friends!

Trailer is a PITA. Keep the truck. Screw what the neighbors think.

I look at it from an insurance POV. If I could get away with only a car, fine. But I'm not going to have a car and a truck at the same time if I need a truck. Now, I have both; I'm speaking as if I was a single man. That's the nice thing about multiple drivers, multiple kinds of vehicles in the pool to choose from.

I view my Truck as simply another tool that makes towing a breeze.
