Fast-food workers begin strikes across U.S. over wages

what will we do without....... McDonald's fries

, "employees of McDonald's Corp, Wendy's Restaurants LLC, Burger King Worldwide Inc and others have pledged to walk off their jobs in 50 cities from Boston, Mass., to Alameda, Calif., organizers say. They are expected to be joined by retail employees at stores owned by Macy's Inc., Sears Holdings Corp. and Dollar Tree Inc. in some cities."

Shut them all down, we would be healthier for it.

Yep, lots of other folks will take those jobs if you don't want them.

And we would have cleaner streets! So much fast food left-overs and containers are dumped all over the country. The fast food industry should pay extra taxes to pay for clean-up of their products!

I sympathize with the worker's plight and feel like it is not good that a full time worker qualifies for welfare.

But, $15/hr (what they are asking) seems just a tad high.

And, what about all the people who really hard work for min. wage?? People who dig ditches in the burning hot Louisiana sun in the summer. I used to do that. The food biz was soft work.

If you pay them all this money you can probably hire a quarter as many people that are smart enough to follow directions. Been to a McD's recently, they are like rats running in all directions, very inefficient.

Unskilled labor on strike = go find more unskilled labor.

My guess half of those workers can't count anyways. Give them 15 pesos per hour.

Seriously, the few and rare times I patron a fast food eatery, I've had the cashier struggle with counting back for change! I mean, doesn't the register simply tell them what change to give?

Traditionally those jobs were high school kids part time work or drop outs who had no other skills or work experience. Min wage was for that first job, unskilled just learn how to show up on time.
With the economic downturn and lack of jobs we now have people trying to support themselves on these jobs. The solution is not to raise the pay for starter jobs but to create a vibrant economy which is creating jobs that pay based on the value delivered.

At least the strikers were clever enough to time it when high school kids couldn't fill their positions!

Call the White House...they seem to not be interested in the economy.

I got a Jack in the Box hamburger for lunch, not a problem, got a berry smoothie from McDonalds half hour ago, no problem, not a sign of protest.

The article has changed since I read it earlier today. Earlier today there was a quote from someone that said that when you make $7.35 an hour and only work 20-25hrs/week, that's $10k and you can't live on that much money.

U.S. fast-food workers protest, demand a 'living wage' | Reuters

Quote:
Jennings said that in her 11 years at McDonald's, she has never received a raise above her wage of $7.40 an hour.
Well, ask for more money, or quit and go somewhere else.

That's right.

In the long run, the problem should solve itself. Of course, in the long run, we shall all be dead... as one Nobel Prize winner said...

He cried right there.
